Dr. Gittens' academic journey began at The UWI Cave Hill Campus, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with Economics. Her passion for the subject and its potential to solve real-world challenges propelled her forward as she pursued further studies. She then moved on to Western University in London, Ontario, Canada, where she obtained her MSc and PhD in Computer Science. It was in London, that Dr. Gittens found both academic and personal growth, noting that a contributor to her success was the supportive community she was a part of.
Throughout her career, Dr. Gittens has made significant strides, not only in academia but also in industry and leadership. Her diverse experiences as a Research Staff Member at IBM Canada, a Project Management Analyst Consultant to the Canadian Government, and the President of the Kitchener-Waterloo Software Quality Association, have helped shape her as a versatile professional and a mentor to countless students. Her leadership roles at The UWI, including as the first female Head of the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics (CMP), are a testament to her ability to break barriers and guide others toward success.
A Multifaceted Researcher and Innovator
Dr. Gittens' research interests span across mobile applications, software quality, resource monitoring, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Her current work, particularly in the realms of Software Testing, Social Robotics, and IoT, holds immense promise for both academic advancements and practical applications. As Co-Lead, with Dr. Curtis Gittens, of the Smart-X and AI Lab (SAIL) at The UWI Cave Hill Campus, Dr. Gittens works at the forefront of cutting-edge research that aims to improve software systems, foster innovation and enhance the human experience. Her work on mobile health applications and personal efficiency tools speaks to her commitment to using technology for societal betterment.
Notably, Dr. Gittens holds a patent with IBM Canada in software quality -specifically, a ground-breaking method for software test coverage analysis. This achievement showcases her unique ability to turn theory into tangible innovation that can benefit industries worldwide. Beyond the patent, Dr. Gittens has published widely and contributed to several conferences, workshops and tutorials, including her involvement with the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Gaming, Entertainment and Media international conferences in Barbados in 2022 and 2023.
As an esteemed member of international programme committees, Dr. Gittens has been integral in shaping conversations and advancing knowledge in software engineering and related fields. She served as Programme Committee Member for the prestigious 2014, 2015 and 2016 HASE and 2011 ISSRE conferences, and as Proceedings Co-Chair for the A* International Conference in Software Engineering in 2019.
Leadership with a Purpose
Dr. Gittens’ career has been marked by a series of firsts. She became the first female Head of the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics (CMP) at The UWI Cave Hill Campus, a role she held from 2020 to 2024. This milestone is particularly significant as it highlights Dr. Gittens' leadership capabilities in an area traditionally dominated by men, and her deep commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive academic environment.
