

A Lifelong Passion for Teaching and Research
Dr. Garner-O'Neale’s journey in education and research is deeply rooted in a fundamental belief: Teaching science is key to developing an enlightened citizenry and a productive economy. Holding a PhD in Chemistry, Dr. Garner-O'Neale has made it her mission to address the challenges inherent in the teaching and learning of chemistry, from early childhood through to university. Her research is particularly focused on developing effective strategies to engage and motivate students – a pursuit that has positioned her as a leader in the field of science education.
"Teaching is a major part of my purpose", she says, "and I am passionate about it. My approach is designed to enhance the learning environment. I use varying strategies like the Flipped Classroom and gamification for formative assessment to accommodate a wide range of learning styles and abilities".

Her innovative approach to teaching has not only enhanced student experiences but has also set a high standard for academic excellence within the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST). Dr. Garner-O'Neale’s ability to adapt her teaching methods to suit diverse learning needs underscores her dedication to student success.
A Pillar of Mentorship and Leadership
Beyond her exceptional classroom presence, Dr. Garner-O'Neale is a recognized mentor who has significantly contributed to the academic and professional development of students. She is the founding Faculty Advisor of the Chemistry Society (ChemSoc), where she has played an instrumental role in shaping a community of chemistry enthusiasts. Her vision for postgraduate research led to the creation of SPARK, a programme designed to build a cohesive and supportive research community for postgraduate students.
As a former Deputy Dean of the FST Faculty, Dr. Garner-O'Neale facilitated the integration of interns from the Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) into the postgraduate programmes at FST, ensuring that students received the guidance and resources they needed to succeed. This initiative resulted in the successful graduation of two (2) CIMH interns, with one (1) currently pursuing a PhD.
Dr. Garner-O'Neale’s mentorship is also reflected in the impressive number of students she has supervised, including one (1) MPhil and four (4) PhD graduates, with several more students currently under her guidance. She has served on the advisory committees of four (4) postgraduate students and has supervised over hundred (100) undergraduate student projects, further solidifying her role as a nurturing force in academic development.
A Legacy of Recognition and Excellence
Dr. Garner-O'Neale’s impact in the field of chemistry education has been widely recognized through numerous awards. In 2024, she was honoured with the prestigious FST Mentorship Award, acknowledging her outstanding contributions to student mentorship and development. Her other accolades include the CETL Partner Award (2022), CETL/Guild Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2019), and the Principal’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2013), among many others.

Her commitment to excellence in teaching and mentorship has been celebrated across multiple spheres, from the academic community to her alma mater. In 2016, she received The Flame Award from The Combermere School Old Scholars Association, while in 1997 she earned the Sir Frank Worrell Award for Excellence during her undergraduate years. These accolades reflect Dr. Garner-O'Neale’s enduring dedication to the pursuit of excellence, whether as a student, educator or mentor.
Leadership on the Global Stage
Dr. Garner-O'Neale’s leadership extends well beyond the walls of The UWI Cave Hill Campus. She has served in several influential roles within professional organizations, including as President of the Mixed Methods International Research Association – Caribbean Chapter (MMIRA-CC). Her leadership in this capacity has been marked by her role in organizing the 2023 MMIRA-CC Conference in Trinidad and Tobago, where she served as Vice-Chair. On the global stage, Dr. Garner-O'Neale is making her mark as the Chair of the MOOC Committee (2023-2025) for the global MMIRA body and contributing to the planning of the 2024 MMIRA Global Conference.
Her commitment to diversity and inclusion is also evident in her work with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), where she served as STEM Champion and Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee for the 2022-2024 term. Through her efforts, Dr. Garner-O'Neale has contributed to advancing science education and fostering an inclusive learning environment that encourages diverse participation. Dr. Garner-O'Neale is also a pioneer in fostering professional networks for chemistry educators in the region. She founded the Barbados Network of Chemistry Teachers, a platform dedicated to supporting and connecting educators in the field.

In addition, Dr. Garner-O'Neale designed two (2) innovative undergraduate courses aimed at bridging the gap between science content and pedagogy. These courses, “Fundamentals of Teaching Chemistry” and “Science Teaching for the Caribbean” (offered online in the summer), exposed students to the core principles of teaching and learning in Chemistry and science, preparing them for effective science instruction in the Caribbean context.
An Advocate for Science Education Beyond the Classroom
Dr. Garner-O'Neale’s influence extends beyond higher education. She has conducted numerous workshops and webinars on mixed methods research methodology, science education and engaging young learners in the sciences. She has been instrumental in organizing the MIST/FST Science and Technology Festival, a celebrated initiative that promotes science education to the wider public and sparks curiosity in students from primary to secondary school levels.
Through her efforts, Dr. Garner-O'Neale has worked to bridge the gap between science and society, encouraging young learners to explore the wonders of chemistry while fostering a broader appreciation for the sciences as a whole.
