Celebrating FST Excellence: Meet Dr. Kelly Brathwaite – A Lecturer who is Pioneering Progress in Microbiology, Food Safety and Education

Dr. Kelly Brathwaite, Lecturer in Microbiology in the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences (BCS), under our Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus, is a driving force in the field of microbiology, with a career spanning over two (2) decades. Specializing in Food Science, Molecular Biology and Microbial Diagnostics, Dr. Brathwaite’s work has made a profound impact on food safety, agriculture and public health in the Caribbean region. Her commitment to innovative research, coupled with her passion for education, has cemented her as one of the most respected voices in the region’s scientific community.

A Career Built on Innovation and Impact

Dr. Brathwaite’s career trajectory is defined by her unwavering dedication to solving complex scientific challenges and her ability to translate research into tangible, real-world solutions. After earning a Double Major in Biology at The UWI Cave Hill Campus in 2002, Dr. Brathwaite quickly found herself at the forefront of microbiology research in Barbados. Working at the Government Analytical Services, Ministry of Agriculture, she became deeply involved in food safety and food microbiology, working closely with the food manufacturing industry to address critical challenges related to contamination and quality assurance.

Her academic pursuits took her to the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, where she completed her MSc in Food Science and Microbiology in 2008. Here, she developed a molecular protocol for detecting foodborne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella Enteritidisa project that helped to earn her a degree with Distinction. Her work bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical solutions, demonstrating her early commitment to improving food safety standards.

Her intellectual journey continued at the University of Nottingham, where she completed her PhD in Food Sciences in 2014. Dr. Brathwaite’s research focused on biocontrol methods for Campylobacter jejuni, a major pathogen in the poultry industry. A key achievement during her PhD was publishing the genome sequence of a Campylobacter strain central to her research, solidifying her reputation as a leading scientist in foodborne pathogen detection and control.

Transforming Veterinary and Public Health through Molecular Diagnostics

Dr. Brathwaite’s contributions go beyond academia, having played a pivotal role in enhancing disease surveillance and diagnostics in Barbados. In 2016, she was seconded to the Veterinary Services Laboratory, where she was instrumental in establishing a Molecular Diagnostics section that revolutionized the country’s ability to detect animal diseases, including avian influenza and avian mycoplasmosis. Through the introduction of molecular detection methods for pathogens in foods of animal origin, Dr. Brathwaite helped strengthen food safety protocols and improve public health resilience.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Brathwaite’s expertise was once again called upon when she was seconded to the Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory. For two (2) years, she played a crucial role in the island’s COVID-19 response by supporting PCR testing and contributing to vital public health measures, ensuring the health and safety of the Barbadian population during a time of unprecedented crisis.

Educating the Next Generation of Scientists

As a lecturer at The UWI Cave Hill Campus, Dr. Brathwaite’s impact extends to shaping the future of microbiology in the Caribbean. Since joining the University as a Part-time Lecturer in 2019, she has dedicated herself to nurturing the next generation of scientists. By 2024, she transitioned to a full-time position, where she now actively teaches, mentors and inspires students. Her passion for research and innovation resonates with her students, who benefit from her extensive professional experience and her commitment to advancing scientific excellence.

Dr. Brathwaite’s research interests continue to evolve, focusing on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the food chain, food quality assurance, and emerging molecular tools for disease management. As the global threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) grows, Dr. Brathwaite is at the forefront of researching solutions to mitigate its impact on food security and public health, particularly in the context of Caribbean agricultural practices.

A Vision for the Future

Dr. Brathwaite’s unwavering passion for her field is encapsulated in her personal philosophy: “Passion fuels purpose, and with dedication, there are no limits to what can be achieved”. This mindset has guided her journey from her early days as a microbiologist to her current role as an educator and researcher. Her dedication to advancing food safety, animal health and molecular diagnostics has not only enhanced the Caribbean's scientific landscape but has also paved the way for more sustainable and resilient food systems.

As Dr. Brathwaite continues her work at The UWI, she remains committed to addressing the region’s scientific challenges through innovative research and by empowering the next generation of microbiologists. Her legacy is one of excellence, dedication and a relentless pursuit of knowledge that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the field of microbiology and beyond.
