As a Lecturer in Organic Chemistry in the Faculty of Science and Technology’s (FST’s) Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences (BCS), Dr. Ellis-Holder’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable. With a professional career that spans over two (2) decades, she has made significant contributions to the fields of synthetic chemistry and natural products research, all while passionately advocating for STEM education, especially for young women in the Caribbean.

A Journey Steeped in Passion and Discovery
Dr. Ellis-Holder’s fascination with organic chemistry began in 1999 at the State University of New York in Buffalo. Under the guidance of Professor Steven T. Diver, she embarked on a path that would fuel her love for the subject and lead to her ground-breaking work in synthetic methodology and catalyst development. Her PhD research focused on the synthesis of N-heterocyclic carbene ligands within an encapsulated cyclophane environment, designed to enhance the Grubbs catalyst for olefin metathesis. The successful completion of her project in 2005 laid the foundation for her future work and cemented her as a rising star in the world of chemistry.

Upon completing her doctoral degree, Dr. Ellis-Holder returned to the Caribbean, where she assumed a faculty position at the University of Guyana. Over the past ten (10) years, she shared her knowledge and passion for chemistry with students, and it was during this time that her interest in natural products research blossomed. She began investigating the bioactive compounds found in local plant species, which continue to form the cornerstone of her current research.
Research That Connects Science with Society
Fueled by an interest in ethnopharmacology, Dr. Ellis-Holder’s research has made significant strides in both synthetic chemistry and natural products through her selection of research targets that are of tremendous value to Caribbean and indigenous societies. One of her key contributions is the investigation of bioactive compounds from native plants, a venture that blends her scientific expertise with a deep appreciation for the natural world. Among her notable projects are the isolation and partial characterization of alkaloids from Montrichardia arboresens (locally known as Moco Moco), a plant well known for its ability to promote blood clotting. She has also contributed to the exploration of the chemical and medicinal properties of Psidium guajava (guava) by isolating and partially characterizing the molecular structure of the recently discovered anticancer meroterpenoid, Guajadial A.

Another area of focus for Dr. Ellis-Holder has been the study of mucilaginous plants, including Aloe barbadensis (Aloe vera), Abelmoschus esculentus (okra) and Opuntia fiscus (cactus). Through rigorous experimentation efforts, she has pursued the phytochemical extraction and exploration of antifungal properties of these plants, including their ability to combat Malassezia furfur, the fungus associated with dandruff. These research projects not only contribute further to the scientific understanding of these plants and their properties but also have the potential to benefit local communities by exploring natural remedies that could be used for medicinal and a plethora of other purposes. Presently, the work continues as ongoing investigations in unique properties of the beloved plant Cymbopogon citratus, commonly known as lemon grass, as part of a collaborative effort here, at the UWI. The results of this work promise to yield vital answers to many existing questions.
A Passion for Education and Empowerment
While Dr. Ellis-Holder’s scientific achievements are impressive, her contributions to education are equally noteworthy. A staunch advocate for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, she has consistently worked to inspire and empower young women in the Caribbean to pursue careers in science and technology. Throughout her career, she has initiated several programmes and initiatives aimed at increasing female participation in these fields, ensuring that the next generation of scientists has the tools and encouragement to succeed.
Dr. Ellis-Holder’s passion for teaching and mentorship extends beyond the classroom. Over the years, she has served in administrative roles, including Head of Department and Assistant Dean, where she had the opportunity to guide and influence not just students but also fellow educators.
