Celebrating FST Excellence: Meet Dr. Joanne Simmons-Boyce – A Trailblazer in Science, Education, and Community Engagement

In the heart of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), there is a shining example of dedication, expertise and passion for both science and community service: Dr. Joanne Simmons-Boyce. As the Senior Laboratory Technician -Instruments in the Department of Biological & Chemical Sciences (BCS), Dr. Simmons-Boyce’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, continuous learning and a deep commitment to fostering growth in others.

A Journey of Passion and Discovery
Dr. Simmons-Boyce’s career in the sciences was sparked during a summer internship at the Quality Assurance Laboratory at the Arawak Cement Plant. It was there that she discovered her love for Chemistry, setting the foundation for a remarkable career. Her academic path was equally inspiring. After completing her BSc. degree in Biology and Chemistry, she embarked on postgraduate studies in Natural Products Chemistry, focusing her research on isolating and characterizing secondary metabolites from Barbadian ornamental and wild plants. Her hard work culminated in a doctorate in 2002.

From there, Dr. Simmons-Boyce’s career trajectory took her to Canada, where she worked as a visiting fellow at the National Research Council of Canada – Institute for Marine Biosciences. For three (3) years, she conducted pioneering research on the health benefits of seaweed and berries abundant in Atlantic Canada. Her contributions to the scientific community through published research and international conference presentations were just the beginning of her growing influence.

Dedication to Education and Training
Returning to Barbados in 2009, Dr. Simmons-Boyce rejoined the BCS Department within our FST Faculty at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus. As Senior Laboratory Technician, she took on the responsibility of managing and maintaining an array of advanced analytical instruments, including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectrometers, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) systems and Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) systems.

Her role, however, extends far beyond technical expertise. Dr. Simmons-Boyce is renowned for her personalized approach to faculty and student training. Over the years, she has conducted countless training sessions tailored to meet the individual needs of users, ensuring they gain the confidence and skills to independently operate complex instruments. Her dedication to helping others is evident in her continuous professional development, attending international courses and webinars to stay at the forefront of her field.
 
One remarkable example of her commitment to mentorship and collaboration occurred between 2011 and 2013, when she completed advanced courses at Bruker BioSpin Corporation and Agilent Technologies. These courses not only enhanced her skills but also allowed her to bring back valuable knowledge that would benefit both students and faculty members.

Building Strong Partnerships
Dr. Simmons-Boyce has also built meaningful partnerships across the scientific community, bridging gaps between The UWI, industry and government. A shining example of this occurred earlier this year (2024) when the BCS Department’s HPLC system was out of service. Undeterred, Dr. Simmons-Boyce facilitated an arrangement for a postgraduate student to complete her research at Mount Gay Distillery, St. Lucy. Despite the challenges of managing logistics, she ensured that the student met her research deadlines. As a reciprocal gesture, Dr. Simmons-Boyce offered training sessions for the distillery's technicians, further strengthening ties between academia and industry.
 
Additionally, recognizing the challenges of instrument maintenance and part availability on a smaller campus, Dr. Simmons-Boyce has built a strategic stockpile of essential instrument parts and consumables. This foresight has minimized downtime, saved costs and ensured that faculty and external partners always have access to critical resources, demonstrating her proactive and collaborative spirit.

A Legacy of Service
Dr. Simmons-Boyce’s contributions to the wider community extend far beyond her work at The UWI. She has been an active member of several community organizations, serving with distinction in the Barbados Boy Scouts Association (BBSA) since 2007. Her service has been recognized through multiple awards, including the prestigious Silver Coconut Award in 2018. Through the BBSA, she has mentored young people and supported numerous initiatives that empower local communities.
 
Her work with the Biocultural Education and Research Programme (BERP) further highlights her dedication to conservation and education. As an Administrative and Programme Assistant since 2018, she has contributed to efforts aimed at conserving Barbados’ plant biodiversity through education, research and outreach. Her involvement in the production of educational resources and hosting symposia like “Plants and Planting for the Future has helped foster a deeper appreciation for the environment.

Dr. Simmons-Boyce also plays an instrumental role in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Chemistry Workshop, which she co-hosts annually for Barbadian secondary school students. This workshop aims to demystify Chemistry and inspire young people by showcasing the many careers and applications of Chemistry in daily life. The event has become a hallmark of her commitment to science education, attracting over one hundred (100) students each year.

A Personal Philosophy of Gratitude and Service
When asked about the driving force behind her work, Dr. Simmons-Boyce offers a personal mantra that reflects her approach to life: “Each day I try to embrace an attitude of gratitude for all that I am blessed with; treat others as I would like to be treated: with empathy, kindness and respect; conduct myself with integrity and give of my best regardless of the task.”

This philosophy of humility, service and integrity shines through in every aspect of her career. Whether she is mentoring students, collaborating with colleagues or contributing to community projects, Dr. Simmons-Boyce brings a sense of purpose and dedication to everything she does.

Recognizing Excellence
Dr. Simmons-Boyce’s tireless dedication to her work, students and the community makes her an invaluable asset to our Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The UWI Cave Hill Campus and a true leader in her field. Her achievements were recently celebrated when she received a UWI Long Service Staff Award for fifteen (15) years of service, a well-deserved recognition of her ongoing contributions to the advancement of science, education and community development.

Through her work, Dr. Simmons-Boyce continues to inspire the next generation of scientists and leaders, proving that the impact of one individual’s dedication can ripple outwards, transforming lives and shaping the future.
