A Spotlight on The UWI Cave Hill Meteorology (MET) Society: A Journey of Growth, Knowledge and Impact

As part of the Faculty of Science and Technology’s (FST) 40th Anniversary Year of Celebrations, we are excited to recognize the remarkable journey of The University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus Meteorology (MET) Society. This dynamic student-led organization has not only become a beacon of knowledge and advocacy in meteorology, but it has also fostered a strong sense of community among students from diverse disciplines.

The Cave Hill Meteorology (MET) Society: A Hub for Meteorology Enthusiasts
At its core, the Cave Hill Meteorology (MET) Society is dedicated to supporting the academic and professional growth of students pursuing meteorology and related fields. The society’s mission is multifaceted:

  • Orientation and Integration: Helping new regional meteorology students adjust to life at The UWI Cave Hill Campus and within the Barbadian society.
  • Academic Support and Advocacy: Assisting students with their studies and advocating for them when challenges arise.
  • Public Education: Spreading awareness about meteorological phenomena, from atmospheric oscillations to complex numerical simulations.
  • Networking and Career Opportunities: Building a strong network within the University and beyond, creating pathways for career development and collaboration with external organizations.

The Executive Team of the Cave Hill Meteorology (MET) Society plays an essential role in these initiatives. Under the guidance of Course Coordinator Ms. Kathy-Ann Caesar and Faculty Advisor Dr. Andrea Sealy, the leadership team, including President Mr. Shem Robinson, Vice-President Mr. Keoni Williams, and all the other key members of the Cave Hill Meteorology (MET) Society (as shown below), work tirelessly to create opportunities for growth and engagement:

A Rich History of Growth and Collaboration
Initially a small organization due to the niche nature of meteorology, the Cave Hill Meteorology (MET) Society has expanded significantly over the years. Now, the society boasts a diverse membership, including students from disciplines such as Environmental Science, Physics, Computer Science and Accounting. This cross-disciplinary participation enriches the society, fostering collaborative learning and broadening career prospects.

The Cave Hill Meteorology (MET) Society has also formed invaluable partnerships with organizations such as the Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH), Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS), the Barbados Cloud Observatory (BCO) and the Cave Hill Environmental Science Club, enhancing members' educational and networking experiences.

Key Initiatives and Contributions
The Cave Hill Meteorology (MET) Society is known for its innovative initiatives that engage the wider University community and beyond. Some standout programmes include:

  • The Meteorology Society Internship Showcase: An annual event where members who have completed internships share their research and field experiences.
  • METE vs ENVI: A friendly competition with the Cave Hill Environmental Science Club that fosters a sense of community and collaboration.
  • Hurricane Season Awareness Campaign: A social media initiative aimed at educating the public on hurricane preparedness and raising awareness about the Caribbean’s vulnerability to these natural disasters.
  • What Happened on Your Birthday?: A fun initiative that connects meteorological phenomena with personal milestones, celebrating both the science and the people.

Additionally, the society’s bi-weekly newsletter, launched as one (1) of the Campus' first, continues to keep members informed on club news, research and significant updates in the world of meteorology.

Milestones and Achievements
Among the Cave Hill Meteorology (MET) Society's proudest accomplishments is its official recognition by The UWI Cave Hill Campus Guild of Students and the Inter-Club Committee during the 2022-2023 academic year – marking the first academic club from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The UWI Cave Hill Campus to be formally recognized!

Members of the society have thrived in internships with institutions such as the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), CIMH and BMS, contributing to significant research projects, including the ORCHESTRA and MAGPIE campaigns. Some have also attended prestigious conferences, such as the American Meteorological Society Student Conference, and earned professional certifications in meteorological techniques.

Inspiring the Future with a Powerful Quote
The Cave Hill Meteorology (MET) Society draws inspiration from the words of Mr. Wayne McGeary, a renowned meteorology specialist at CIMH, who once challenged students to strive for greatness, likening them to a cumulonimbus cloud. “Like the cumulonimbus, you continue to grow, educate yourselves, and leave behind a legacy with your contributions”, he said. This philosophy of striving to reach one’s full potential resonates deeply with the Cave Hill Meteorology (MET) Society’s vision and mission.
