The Science and Technology Festival

On March 5, 6 & 7, 2020 (Thursday, Friday and Saturday), our Faculty (i.e., the Faculty of Science and Technology – FST) partnered once again with the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) of the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Smart Technology (MIST) to host the second Science and Technology Festival under the “graduation tents” at the UWI – Cave Hill Campus.  The Festival commenced with an official opening ceremony, which took place on March 5, 2020 from 9:00 a.m.

The theme for the three-day Festival was “Science and Technology – Gateway to a new Barbados”, and the youth of Barbados and the general public got the opportunity to discover the joys and wonders of STEM (i.e., Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) through:
  • Fun and interactive displays/exhibits;
  • Technology-based demonstrations and displays (including functioning Humanoid robots);
  • A research posters display (displaying current research);
  • A Science and Technology Speak-Off Competition (for secondary school students) on March 6, 2020;
  • A Science and Technology Sound-Off Competition (for ages 12 - 18) on March 7, 2020; and
  • Other amazing hands-on science-based activities and experiments.

For the 2020 Festival, we had over 37 participating Exhibitors (from both the private and public sectors), and we welcomed huge crowds of teachers/staff and school children of all ages from the different public and private nursery, primary and secondary schools in Barbados.  A large number of teachers/staff and students from various local special needs schools and organizations were also in attendance at, and participated as Exhibitors in the Science and Technology Festival, as the Festival was fully accessible to all and based on our Faculty’s Science for ALL philosophy.  Throughout the three (3) days of the Festival, we had over forty (40) schools in attendance at the event.  Visit our FST Facebook page @nerdatfst or https://www.facebook.com/nerdatfst/ for more details on the Festival!  Our 2020 Festival was even bigger and better than our 2019 Festival, and it was indeed a huge success!
