08/10/2024
As part of our Faculty of Science and Technology's (FST’s) Staff Recognition Programme, we are thrilled to shine a light on Ms. Kim Ashby, our dedicated Senior Laboratory Technician in the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences (BCS) at The UWI Cave Hill Campus. With over a decade of commitment since joining our team in November 2010, Ms. Ashby's contributions to ecology and science education have made a significant impact on the BCS Department and our entire FST community.

A Passion for Ecology
Graduating with a degree in Ecology from The UWI Cave Hill Campus, Ms. Ashby’s passion for science is evident in her work. She has undertaken specialized training, including a Preservation course in England in 2017, and is an active member of both the Barbados Museum and the ACHEA Barbados Chapter. This year, she proudly served as one of the team leads for the local organizing committee of the 21st Annual ACHEA Conference in Barbados, demonstrating her leadership and dedication to advancing higher education.

A Catalyst for Change
Ms. Ashby has made remarkable contributions to the BCS Department, notably by enhancing the slide collection and maintaining detailed records of preserved specimens. Her meticulous work not only safeguards our scientific resources but also saves the University significant costs annually.

Her outreach efforts are equally commendable. Over the Summer of 2024, she participated in various educational initiatives, including:

  • World Environment and Ocean Day: Collaborating with The UWI’s team, she assisted with setting up a showcase of coral specimens, raising public awareness about marine conservation efforts.
  • School Outreach: Engaging with students at St. Stephen’s Primary School and Ellerton Primary School, Ms. Ashby facilitated interactive sessions on native and invasive species, igniting curiosity and passion for science among young learners.
  • SPISE Programme: Ms. Ashby also played a pivotal role in introducing gifted Caribbean students to the topic of Biochemistry through hands-on experiences during some hosted laboratory sessions.
  • Ministry of Industry, Science and Technology (MIST) Science and Technology Summer Camp: Creating an engaging display of specimens categorized by phylum, Ms. Ashby inspired the next generation of scientists, encouraging their enthusiasm for the natural world.
Personal Insights
When asked about her philosophy, Ms. Ashby shared, “I’ve always been fascinated by science and how it integrates into every part of our daily life. Applying scientific principles and logic can therefore lead to more effective solutions”. This mindset not only reflects her personal journey but also informs her approach to her laboratory work and outreach activities.

An Artist at Heart
Beyond her technical expertise, Ms. Ashby is also a talented singer, serving as the Managing Director of The Clarion Singers. Her diverse interests enrich her contributions, blending science with the arts.
