At the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, we look forward to having you join us. By offering a learning environment that promotes critical thinking, curiosity, and scientific investigation, we teach our students the skills needed to contribute to the advancement of scientific study in the Caribbean region. Our Department houses the Barbados Herbarium and the Barbados Sea Turtle Project (BSTP) and our faculty conduct research<\/a> in a range of fields, including Coral Reef Ecology, Sports Agronomy and Biofuels.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Established on August 1st 1996, the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences was formed as a result of the fusion of the former Departments of Biology and Chemistry. The department is housed in the Chemistry and Biology buildings, both of which were expanded in 1996 using funding from the UWI\/IDB loan. While initially focused on the Biological and Chemical sciences, the range of degree programmes offered by the Department has continued to grow with the most recent addition, the major in Environmental Science, established in 2018.
