Background
Philmore Alleyne is Professor of Accounting in the Department of Management Studies at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. He holds a B.Sc. in Accounting (UWI), and an MBA from Oxford Brookes University in the UK. He also holds a Ph.D. in the area of Accounting from the University of Bradford, with his thesis examining whistle-blowing among external auditors being awarded distinction ‘
without corrections’.A Chartered Accountant (FCA) by profession, and a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA) in the UK, he has worked as an Audit Manager in the Accounting and Auditing profession for many years. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Barbados (ICAB). He has worked as an audit specialist on projects financed by the World Bank (WB), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Union (EU). Thus, he brings a wealth of practical experience to the classroom.
Teaching
Professor Alleyne teaches accounting and auditing courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Over the years, he has demonstrated commitment and excellence to teaching and has consistently received average scores of 4, and on several occasions, recorded ratings of 5 on a scale ranging from 1 to 5.
Research and Publications
Professor Alleyne has written extensively on whistleblowing and governance in the Caribbean, with a keen interest on corporate financial failures. Professor Alleyne has published numerous articles in international peer reviewed academic journals. Overall, he has completed over 90 publications including refereed articles, book chapters, books, technical reports as well as refereed conference proceedings and working papers.
The University has recognised his research accomplishments by awarding him the Principal’s Award for Excellence 2012/2013 in the Academic Category for Research and Publications, and Most Outstanding Researcher Awards in the Faculty of Social Sciences for 2014 and 2015. Professor Alleyne’s research has been frequently cited in academic and professional publications (according to Google Scholar). His publication “Towards a conceptual model of whistle-blowing intentions among external auditors” which was published in 2013 by the prestigious British Accounting Review on Elsevier Science Direct, is celebrated as one of the most highly cited papers. Professor Alleyne also won the best paper award from Emerald Literati, an international publisher, in June 2018 for the paper “Antecedents of taxpayers’ intentions to engage in tax evasion: Evidence from Barbados” published in the Journal of Financial Reporting and Accounting. He was later granted the award for the Most Internationally Successful Research from the UWI, Cave Hill Campus in November 2018.
Service to the University
Administratively, Professor Alleyne has served in a number of key positions within the University over the years. He has served as Head of the Department of Management Studies from 2012 to 2018, Director of Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management, Chair of The Campus Time Tabling Committee and Chair of The Student Entrepreneurial Empowerment Development (SEED) Project, to name a few.
Public Service
Professor Alleyne has served as a Commissioner on the regulatory body, the Barbados Fair Trading Commission and is currently a director of Capita Financial Services Inc. as well as Chair of the Barbados Minimum Wage Board. Based on his research, Professor Alleyne has been invited to present his expert opinion to public hearings of the Barbados Senate on Integrity in Public Life Legislation.
