PhD. Management Studies

About the Programme

Desire a career in academia or in consulting at the highest level?   Then a PhD in Management Studies is an excellent option for you. Undertaking the PhD in Management Studies will set you on the path to becoming an expert in your area of study; provide a gateway for making a real contribution to business knowledge, greatly enhance your research capability and place you in a community of academics who are researching in their areas of interest and have presented/published in top local, regional and international conferences/journals.

There are two paths to a PhD in Management Studies : -
 
  1. PhD by thesis- This requires the  completion of a full thesis (approximately 80,000-100,000 words)
  2. PhD by publication. This option requires the candidate to achieve three publications in highly rated international journals.  The target journals will be stipulated by the candidate’s Advisory Committee.  

You will gain an understanding of:

  • the epistemology and ontology of research
  • advanced research design and methodology
  • qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research approaches
  • special contributions of academic research to theory and practice
  • ethical considerations for research
  • academic writing skills including writing for theses and journal publications

Research

Our Faculty conducts research in a wide cross-section of areas related to management including leadership, workplace bullying, psychometric assessment, entrepreneurship, business development, consumer behaviour, e-learning readiness,  industrial psychology, ethics, finance and investments, and accounting theory and practice.

Selected Publications and Research Awards.

In 2018,  Professor Philmore Alleyne was presented with the Outstanding Paper in the 2018 Emerald Literati awards for his article published in the Journal of Financial Reporting and Accounting entitled “Antecedents of taxpayer’s intentions to engage in tax evasion: evidence from Barbados”. Professor Philmore Alleyne is globally recognised for his work in accounting ethics. 

Professor Dwayne Devonish has done significant research in the area of organisational psychology.  His research record has made him the youngest full professor in the entire UWI system, as of 2020.
 
Dr. Dion Greenidge has proven expertise in psychometric assessment. He developed ‘The Hierarchical Personality Assessment Questionnaire (HIPAQ)’ which has been translated into Mandarin and has placed him in demand internationally.
 
Dr. Joseann Knight served as a special editor for two editions of International Marketing Review on the topic of international branding.
 
In 2019, Drs. Nadini Pesaud, Indeira Persaud and Professor Dwayne Devonish published a book with Ian Randle Publishers called the “Nuts and Bolts of Research Methodology: From Conceptualisation to Write Up”
 
In 2019, Dr. Wayne Charles Soverall launched a book he co-authored with Professor Jamal Khan entitled “Empowering Management”.

In 2015, Dr. Sherma Roberts was principal author on a book entitled “Contemporary Caribbean Tourism: Concepts and cases” which will be used by tourism students and academics across the Caribbean and overseas.

Programme Details

The requirements of this course are to:
 
  1. Present PhD research at three (3) research seminars during the course of your programme
  2. Ensure the university’s ethical guidelines are followed throughout the entire PhD process.
  3. Submit a thesis with original theoretical and practical contributions to knowledge in the area of Management Studies
  4. Orally defend your PhD thesis in front of a panel of academic experts in the field and make any corrections necessary.
  5. In conjunction you’re your supervisory team, seek out any opportunities for professional development such as conferences and opportunities to publish your work.

Candidates must have a minimum of a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or a Masters degree with a strong background in Management in order to qualify for entry.  Candidates must able to work independently, with guidance from the assigned Supervisor and/or Advisory Committee.
