MSc. Applied Psychology

About the Programme

Introduction

The M.Sc. in Applied Psychology was developed to meet the needs of the growing number of graduates in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean. The programme will be an attractive offering
to recent university graduates and practicioners who require analytical skills to address psychological issues within organisations and society.

What Will I Study?

Objectives

To produce practitioners who will:
  • Have a working knowledge and appreciation of the discipline of psychology and psychological research;
  • Be able to analyse organisational and society problems by applying contemporary psychological theory;
  • Be able to conduct social psychological research to address organisational and societal problems;
  • Be able to contribute to the body of knowledge of psychology by futhering Caribbean psychological research; and who will
  • Be adequately skilled to pursue further postgraduate study in social psychology and related disciplines.

Programme Details

Programme Structure/Course of Study

Students are required to gain 39 credits through successful completion of 8 courses (3 credits each); a practicum of 500 hours (9 credits); and a research paper (6 credits). Following the taught component of the programme students will be expected to complete 500 hours of practicum placement at the end of which they are expected to make a formal presentation on their practicum experience. All students are required to complete a 20,000 word research paper.

Entry Requirements

To qualify for entry applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work or a related field with at least Second Class honours or equivalent. Students without a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or Social Work will be considered but the department will require these students to complete specific pre-requisite courses. Most applicants will be interviewed.

Duration

This programme can be completed on a full-time basis in 15 months of study including course work, practicum and research paper.
