Head's Welcome

On behalf of my colleagues in the Department of Government, Sociology, Social Work and Psychology, it gives me pleasure to welcome new and continuing students registered in the department this academic year, as The University of the West Indies (The UWI) celebrates 70 years.
To the matriculating class of 2018/19, we thank you for choosing The UWI as your preferred tertiary institution. As a light rising from the West, The UWI continues to advance Caribbean development through intellectual leadership, teaching and learning, research and public service. You are joining a premier regional university with four campuses. As ONE-UWI, our Vision is “to be an excellent global university rooted in the Caribbean” and our Mission is “to advance learning, create knowledge and foster innovation for the positive transformation of the Caribbean and the wider world.” Be assured that you have made the right decision to enter The UWI family at this critical juncture. You are now part of a globally recognised UWI brand epitomised by academic excellence, sporting prowess, cultural
diversity and regionality. As we celebrate 70 years this is an exciting moment for reflection and new bold beginnings.
We particularly welcome you to the Cave Hill Campus, a diverse, dynamic and picturesque campus with a legacy of excellence. As one of the three departments within the Faculty of Social Sciences, a major strength of our department is that it brings together in one place four critical social science disciplines: Political Science, Sociology, Social Work and Psychology. This multi-disciplinary department is now your home. We invite you to explore the wide array of exciting programmes and courses and the numerous activities planned for you. Maximise every opportunity to enrich your mind. Be hungry for knowledge and view the department as a reservoir from which you can draw intellectual nourishment.
The department takes seriously its responsibility to you. We have well-trained administrative and technical staff (ATS) who are committed to providing you with guidance, encouragement and support. We are proud of their tradition of student-centeredness. Our ATS staff warmly welcomes you to the departmental family!
You are embarking on this academic journey at a time of global uncertainty. This moment demands critical thinking skills, robust analysis, creativity and imagination as we seek to find solutions to the challenges that continue to unfold. I wish to assure you that the members of our academic staff are highly qualified experts in their respective fields. We take seriously our mandate to share knowledge with you as we seek to facilitate your learning. We are committed to provide you with analytical tools, skills and competences to prepare you for the world of work and for higher educational pursuits. We pledge to do our utmost to nurture you into the ideal UWI graduate, who is a regionally grounded, conscious global citizen. Be mindful always that you are part of a community that produced you and that you have a responsibility to give back to that community. I encourage you to engage in meaningful service, cognisant that service is a duty to humanity.
Thank you again for choosing The UWI and the Cave Hill campus. Thank you also for deciding to join our multidisciplinary department. We look forward to advising you on your programmes and courses, taking you beyond boundaries in the class rooms, as we seek to stretch your minds intellectually and applauding you with pride as you confidently walk across the stage at graduation; future leaders of our Caribbean, equipped with the knowledge, tools and attitudes required to make a positive difference to the world.
To all of you, study hard and play hard. Immerse yourselves in The UWI Community and the Cave Hill culture.
Welcome matriculating class of 2018/19!
