You have made an excellent choice! Studying economics helps you understand the world around you \u2013 whether that be individuals, businesses, financial institutions, markets or governments. In essence, economics is the foundation for collective human action.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThe department\u2019s mission is to deliver highly employable graduates with the analytical skills, creative intelligence and entrepreneurial thinking needed to address complex business, policy and social realities of the Caribbean and the world at large. We are committed to high-quality teaching, delivering a distinctive and innovative curriculum and nurturing academic excellence. Our diverse staff and extensive partnerships with the private and public sectors enable students to receive the knowledge, skills and experience needed to succeed in their chosen career path.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tAs is well known, one measure of the value-added of an academic programme is the success of its graduates. The breadth and flexibility of our programmes allow our students to succeed in various areas \u2013 including (but not limited to) entrepreneurship, business strategy, finance, public policy, risk management, politics, law, logistics, supply chain management, and health administration. Many of our graduates hold high-level positions at major regional and international institutions\u2013 such as the CARICOM Secretariat, Caribbean Development Bank, Commonwealth Secretariat, European Union Delegation, International Monetary Fund, Pan American Health Organization, United Nations, World Bank and the World Health Organization \u2013 just to name a few. We are also pleased that many CEOs and public office holders began their academic journey with the Department of Economics at UWI Cave Hill.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tAs the semester begins, I encourage you to take some time to get to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fss-econ\/students\/young-economists-association\/\"> <\/a> know<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fss-econ\/staff\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fss-econ\/staff\/\">our staff<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fss-econ\/staff\/academic-en\/\"> <\/a>and your fellow peers. There are several student-led initiatives to allow you to grow your social capital \u2013chief among which is our fantastic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fss-econ\/students\/young-economists-association\/\">Young Economists&#8217; Association<\/a>.
