{"id":43,"date":"2020-10-23T13:49:08","date_gmt":"2020-10-23T17:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fss-econ\/staff-achievements\/"},"modified":"2026-04-03T10:01:28","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T14:01:28","slug":"staff-achievements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fss-econ\/staff\/staff-achievements\/","title":{"rendered":"Staff Achievements"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"container-fluid page-wrapper\">\n<section>\n<div id=\"dept_content\">\n<div id=\"sub_content\" class=\"bodytext\">\n<div class=\"lc-block\">\n<div editable=\"rich\">\n<h1 class=\"page-header\">Staff Achievements <\/h1>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Congratulations to our very own Department of Economics Staff!!!!!!!<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"lc-block\" editable=\"rich\">\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tCongratulations to Dr. Mahalia Jackman and&nbsp;Mrs. Michelle Grandison Taylor on their well-deserved recognition at the Annual Retirees and Long Service Awards Ceremony held on November 18, 2023.&nbsp; While Mrs. Rhea Carrington and Ms. Chadee Miller, were awarded at the Faculty of Social Sciences\u2019 Student and Staff Awards Ceremony held on October, 18, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mahalia-Jackman-(2).jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fss-econ\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Staff\/Mahalia-Jackman-2.jpg\" style=\"float: left; margin: auto 10px;\" title=\"Mahalia-Jackman-(2).jpg\">Dr. Mahalia Jackman, Head, Department of Economics was recognized for her remarkable research output<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\twhich spans a broad spectrum of issues pertinent to Barbados and the global community.&nbsp; During the last five years, she has published 15 pieces of work &#8211; 12 refereed journal articles and 3 monographs &#8211; while juggling a full teaching load and serving as Head of her department as well as various university committees.&nbsp; Dr. Jackman\u2019s multifaceted approach ensures that her work remains relevant to a diverse audience.&nbsp; She is easily classified as a well\u2010rounded researcher whose tentacles envelop the academic, policy and practical domains.&nbsp; She epitomises the pinnacle of research brilliance and contribution for which The UWI is renowned.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"lc-block\">\n<div editable=\"rich\">\n<h5><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><em><span style=\"font-size:9px;\"><strong>Dr. Mahalia Jackman is seen here with the other recipients of the Principal\u2019s Award for Excellence.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFrom Left to Right:&nbsp;Dr. Henri Vall\u00e8s, Mrs. Tanya Martelly, Dr. Mahalia Jackman, Dr. Nadini Persaud, Ms. Lisa-Ann Rollins, Dr. Heather Harewood and Mr. Devon Slater<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lc-block\">\n<div editable=\"rich\">\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Congratulations to Michelle on Twenty \u2013 Five Years of Excellence<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"0R2A9219.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fss-econ\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Staff\/0R2A9219-scaled.jpg\" style=\"width: 285px; height: 189px; float: left; margin: auto 10px;\" title=\"0R2A9219.jpg\">Mrs. Michelle Grandison Taylor, our Administrative Assistant, joined The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, as a Stenographer\/Clerk in 1998. Her first assignment was with the then Dean, Faculty of Humanities, who is now the Vice Chancellor of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tMichelle is the only administrative staff member that can boast of working in all three departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences.&nbsp; From 1998 \u2013 2006 Michelle did just that and worked in the Department&nbsp; of Government, Sociology and Social Work, the Department of Management Studies and the Department of Economics, gaining invaluable experience and understanding of university systems, procedures and protocols.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:9px;\"><strong>Mrs. Michelle Grandison-Taylor receiving her award from the Campus Registrar,<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMr. Rommel Carter, at the 2023 Staff Awards and Retirees Ceremony.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tIn 2006, she was promoted to the post of temporary Administrative Assistant to the Open Campus where she stayed for two years.&nbsp;&nbsp; In 2008, Michelle returned to the Department of Economics as the Administrative Assistant where she has remained ever since.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tMichelle holds a BA in Psychology and works closely with the Head of Department to ensure that the department is run efficiently and effectively. Specifically, she oversees any events or projects the department hosts, ensures the Departmental office runs smoothly and works closely with the coordinators of the post-graduate programmes.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tMichelle has stated that one of her greatest achievements in the Department of Economics is plastering the once bare walls with plaques and pictures honouring the most outstanding students annually.&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tOnce again, we want to congratulate our Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Michelle Grandison-Taylor on providing us with fifteen years of excellent service and The University of the West Indies with twenty-five years of the same.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Congratulations to Rhea and Chade<\/strong><strong>\u00e9<\/strong><strong> \u2013 Annual Student and Staff Awards Ceremony<\/strong>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"SOSCI-Award-Ceremony-2023-51-(1).jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fss-econ\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Staff\/SOSCI-Award-Ceremony-2023-51-1-scaled.jpg\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 300px; float: left; margin: auto 10px;\" title=\"SOSCI-Award-Ceremony-2023-51-(1).jpg\">Mrs. Rhea Carrington was awarded at the annual Faculty of Social Sciences\u2019 Student and Staff Awards ceremony held on Friday, October 20, 2023, for her long serving commitment of fourteen years to the Department of Economics.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;Rhea joined the Department of Economics in 2009, on a Barbados Community College internship programme and has been with the Department ever since.&nbsp; Rhea, our Stenographer\/Clerk I, is responsible for many of the administrative matters that ensures the Department is second to none.&nbsp; She is responsible for the compilation of the annual Departmental Report, the timetabling of courses and the organization of the Faculty of Social Sciences\u2019 Brown Bag Series, just to name a few.&nbsp;Rhea works closely with the Administrative Assistant on whatever projects the Department is involved in. Rhea holds a certificate in Administrative Management from the Barbados Institute of Management and Productivity (BIMAP).&nbsp;Rhea is a very friendly, and helpful individual who is always willing to go above and beyond in her service to staff, students and the general public.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tMrs. Rhea Carrington can be seen above, receiving her award from Professor Troy Lorde, Dean, of the Faculty of Social Sciences.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ms-Chadee-Miller.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fss-econ\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Staff\/Ms-Chadee-Miller.jpg\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 250px; float: left; margin: auto 10px;\" title=\"Ms-Chadee-Miller.jpg\">Ms. Chadee&#8217;&nbsp;Miller holds a BSc in Accounting and first joined the Department of Economics in 2013 on a temporary basis. Subsequent to that, she worked with numerous departments but returned to the Department in September 2017.&nbsp; Chade\u00e9 is the face of the Department, as she is the first-person students and the public meet when they visit our office.&nbsp;She assists the other administrative staff members in ensuring that all aspects pertaining to the organization and delivery of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are met in a timely manner.&nbsp; Chade\u00e9 is specifically responsible for updating the Departmental website and Summer School.
