Congratulations to our very own Department of Economics Staff!!!!!!!

 
Congratulations to Dr. Mahalia Jackman and Mrs. Michelle Grandison Taylor on their well-deserved recognition at the Annual Retirees and Long Service Awards Ceremony held on November 18, 2023.  While Mrs. Rhea Carrington and Ms. Chadee Miller, were awarded at the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Student and Staff Awards Ceremony held on October, 18, 2023.


Mahalia-Jackman-(2).jpgDr. Mahalia Jackman, Head, Department of Economics was recognized for her remarkable research output
which spans a broad spectrum of issues pertinent to Barbados and the global community.  During the last five years, she has published 15 pieces of work - 12 refereed journal articles and 3 monographs - while juggling a full teaching load and serving as Head of her department as well as various university committees.  Dr. Jackman’s multifaceted approach ensures that her work remains relevant to a diverse audience.  She is easily classified as a well‐rounded researcher whose tentacles envelop the academic, policy and practical domains.  She epitomises the pinnacle of research brilliance and contribution for which The UWI is renowned.

Congratulations to Michelle on Twenty – Five Years of Excellence
 
0R2A9219.jpgMrs. Michelle Grandison Taylor, our Administrative Assistant, joined The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, as a Stenographer/Clerk in 1998. Her first assignment was with the then Dean, Faculty of Humanities, who is now the Vice Chancellor of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles.

Michelle is the only administrative staff member that can boast of working in all three departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences.  From 1998 – 2006 Michelle did just that and worked in the Department  of Government, Sociology and Social Work, the Department of Management Studies and the Department of Economics, gaining invaluable experience and understanding of university systems, procedures and protocols.

In 2006, she was promoted to the post of temporary Administrative Assistant to the Open Campus where she stayed for two years.   In 2008, Michelle returned to the Department of Economics as the Administrative Assistant where she has remained ever since.

Michelle holds a BA in Psychology and works closely with the Head of Department to ensure that the department is run efficiently and effectively. Specifically, she oversees any events or projects the department hosts, ensures the Departmental office runs smoothly and works closely with the coordinators of the post-graduate programmes.
 
Michelle has stated that one of her greatest achievements in the Department of Economics is plastering the once bare walls with plaques and pictures honouring the most outstanding students annually. 
 
Once again, we want to congratulate our Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Michelle Grandison-Taylor on providing us with fifteen years of excellent service and The University of the West Indies with twenty-five years of the same.
 
 
       Congratulations to Rhea and Chadeé – Annual Student and Staff Awards Ceremony
 
 
SOSCI-Award-Ceremony-2023-51-(1).jpgMrs. Rhea Carrington was awarded at the annual Faculty of Social Sciences’ Student and Staff Awards ceremony held on Friday, October 20, 2023, for her long serving commitment of fourteen years to the Department of Economics.
 
 Rhea joined the Department of Economics in 2009, on a Barbados Community College internship programme and has been with the Department ever since.  Rhea, our Stenographer/Clerk I, is responsible for many of the administrative matters that ensures the Department is second to none.  She is responsible for the compilation of the annual Departmental Report, the timetabling of courses and the organization of the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Brown Bag Series, just to name a few. Rhea works closely with the Administrative Assistant on whatever projects the Department is involved in. Rhea holds a certificate in Administrative Management from the Barbados Institute of Management and Productivity (BIMAP). Rhea is a very friendly, and helpful individual who is always willing to go above and beyond in her service to staff, students and the general public.

Ms-Chadee-Miller.jpgMs. Chadee' Miller holds a BSc in Accounting and first joined the Department of Economics in 2013 on a temporary basis. Subsequent to that, she worked with numerous departments but returned to the Department in September 2017.  Chadeé is the face of the Department, as she is the first-person students and the public meet when they visit our office. She assists the other administrative staff members in ensuring that all aspects pertaining to the organization and delivery of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are met in a timely manner.  Chadeé is specifically responsible for updating the Departmental website and Summer School. Once you visit or call the Department of Economics you can be assured of a warm welcome from Chadeé.
Ms. Chadeé Miller was awarded at the annual Faculty of Social Sciences’ Student and Staff Awards ceremony held on Friday, October 20, 2023, for her six years of service to the Department of Economics.
