Bio

Dr. Damian Cohall is a Jamaican born pharmacologist who joined the Faculty of the Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill in 2008. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology at the university and has profound research interests in Ethnopharmacology and Pharmnocognosy.  In 2014, he published a book through the UWI Press entitled “Medicinal Plants of Barbados for the Treatment of Communicable and Non-communicable Diseases”.  Most recently, he co-authored the chapter “Pharmacodynamics - A Pharmacognosy Perspective” in a book entitled Pharmacognosy: Fundamentals and Strategy, Elsevier: In Press. He also maintains an active research interest in cardiovascular risk profiling and medical education, and has published successfully in those areas. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the West Indian Medical Journal.

Dr. Cohall coordinated the Phase 1 component of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS) curriculum from the inception of the full Faculty of Medical Sciences at the UWI, Cave Hill in 2008 to 2015. He is currently the Director of the Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) and the PhD Pharmacology programmes in the Faculty. In 2011, he received the Faculty’s Award of Merit for Leadership in Education.

Dr Cohall is also quite keen on contributing to his direct community and region. He currently represents his discipline and Faculty on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Drug and Therapeutic Monitoring (DTC) Committee in Barbados. Regionally, he has served as Lead UWI Consultant on the Caribbean Export Development Agency’s CARTFUND project to establish regional standards for the Health and Wellness Sector in CARIFORUM territories. He has also assessed the quality of medical training programmes throughout the region by serving on accreditation teams of the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) in various capacities.
