About the Programme

The BSc. in Preclinical Sciences is a 3-year degree at The UWI Cave Hill Campus, that is articulated as Phase 1 of the Transnational Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery Degree (MB ChB) at the University of Ghana (UG).

All students successfully graduating with the BSc, Preclinical Sciences from The UWI will be granted automatic entry to Year Four of the MB ChB degree at the University of Ghana.
 
Students will be registered at both institutions from the start of the program and will transition seamlessly from one phase to the other.

What Will I Study?

On successful completion of Phase 1 (Preclinical) and Phase 2 (Clinical), graduates will possess core knowledge, competencies and behaviours that will enable them to: 

Provide Patient Care  
  • Apply relevant knowledge from the biomedical and behavioural sciences to the care of individuals, families and groups in community and hospital settings.
 
Gain International Experience
  • Living and learning in two markedly different healthcare systems - the Caribbean and Africa - offers invaluable social and cultural experiences and perspectives that will enrich your preparation for international medical practice.   

Increase Community Awareness
  • Plan, and/or engage in health promotion activities aimed at promoting healthy life styles in individuals and communities.

Effectively Communicate & Collaborate
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and other members of the health team.
  • Function harmoniously and constructively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team within the health sector and between the health sector and other sectors of society.

Successfully Manage Health Services
  • Participate in planning, organising, directing and evaluating healthcare. 

Personal Development
  • Keep abreast of social, medical and technological advances through participation in continuing medical education.

Additional Information

The UWI/UG Transnational MB ChB degree is a six-year program consisting of:
 
  • A three-year Bachelor of Science, Preclinical Sciences degree, at The UWI Cave Hill Campus Faculty of Medical Sciences.
 
  • Three years of clinical training at the University of Ghana (UG) Medical School (UGMS)

Programme Details

The BSc. Preclinical Sciences consists of 109 credits. Courses include the following: 
 

  • Healthcare System
  • Fundamentals of Disease and Treatment
  • Introduction to General Embryology and Histology
  • The Locomotor System
  • Introduction to Medical Practice
  • The Urinary System
  • Clinical Haematology

BSc Preclinical Sciences (Phase 1)
 
UWI Registration Fees – US$555.00 per year
 
UG Registration Fees – US$150.00
 
Tuition Fees – US$32,500 per year (Partial Tuition Scholarships available).
 
Housing and Maintenance – approximately US$10,000 per year

Applicants may present a range of qualifications, including:
 
1. West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
Passes in three (3) core and three elective subjects inclusive of:
  • Core Mathematics (core)
  • English (core)
  • Integrated Sciences (core)
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology/Elective Mathematics

2. GCE O’ and A’ Level or CXC CSEC and CAPE equivalents
Passes in a minimum of five (5) CXC CSEC subjects of general proficiency (Grades I-III) or GCE O’ Level (Grades A-C) inclusive of:
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Mathematics
  • English Language
 
Passes in four subjects at A’ Level or four two-units of the CAPE equivalents in:
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Mathematics
 
3. International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme
Students must have passes in IB subjects equivalent to the entry criteria established for GCE A ‘Level/CAPE subjects.

Please note the BSc. Preclinical Studies is ONLY available to students who intend to complete their 3 years of clinical training at the University of Ghana in Accra, Ghana, to be awarded the MB ChB degree.
