BSc Human Nutrition and Dietetics Programme

Programme Description

This programme will prepare students to become nutrition and dietetic practitioners with the knowledge and skills to enable them to improve health and prevent, treat, and manage disease through nutrition. The BSc HND degree has an integrated supervised practice (dietetic internship) in Human Nutrition and Dietetics which promotes the clinical acumen of dietetics and research in nutrition.  The programme also aligns with the standards established by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP).
On completion of this training persons will be eligible for registration as a Dietitian by the Barbados Paramedical Council or an equivalent council regionally.

Curriculum Overview
  • The science of Human Nutrition
  • The unique nutrition needs throughout the different stages of the lifecycle
  • How society and culture influence food and health
  • How to assess, diagnose, treat, and manage diet and nutrition related health challenges
  • The science of food and how food products are developed
  • How to provide nutrition education and intervention in the community and public health settings
  • The benefits of local and indigenous Caribbean foods
  • Research skills in diet, nutrition, and health
  • The core competencies required to function as an entry level dietitian

You will do courses in:
  1. Life Sciences e.g. Structure and Function, Tissues, Cells, and Organ systems    
  2. Physical Sciences e.g. Chemistry and Organic Chemistry for Nutrition
  3. Behavioral Sciences e.g. Human Development and Behaviour
  4. Nutrition and Dietetics
  5. Medical Nutrition Therapy
  6. Food Science and product development
  7. Food preparation and Food System Management
  8. Research Methodology
  9. Professional and Supervised Practice Experiences
  10. Electives as appropriate

Career Opportunities
This programme is for you if you want to:
  • Become a Registered Dietitian who can work in hospitals, community, and public health settings, or school feeding programmes
  • Teach and promote health.
  • Develop new food products
  • Work in food and nutrition related businesses, industries, and consumer affairs
  • Direct or conduct research in food, pharmaceutical companies, universities, and hospitals
  • Continue on to a postgraduate programme
