{"id":37,"date":"2020-08-10T12:23:50","date_gmt":"2020-08-10T16:23:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fhe\/humn3099-caribbean-studies\/"},"modified":"2026-01-13T20:19:42","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T00:19:42","slug":"humn3099-caribbean-studies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/fhe\/students\/humn3099-caribbean-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"container-fluid page-wrapper site-font\">\n<section>\n<div class=\"lc-block\">\n<div editable=\"rich\">\n<h1 class=\"page-header\">HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies   <\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"faculty-content-page\"><strong>Final Year Research Paper &#8211; HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>About HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies<\/strong><br \/>\nIn their FINAL year&nbsp;<em>(i.e. the last, full academic year before graduating)<\/em>, undergraduates reading for the BA in one of the following areas, are required to investigate some topic relating to the Caribbean, and to report the results in the form of a paper:<\/p>\n<div class=\"lc-block\" editable=\"rich\">\n<ul>\n<li>French<\/li>\n<li>History<\/li>\n<li>Linguistics<\/li>\n<li>Literatures in English<\/li>\n<li>Spanish<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>This course carries six (6) credits and students must register for the course on CHOL<strong>&nbsp;in both semesters I and II<\/strong>.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Approved Thesis Substitutions:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe following may be substituted for the HUMN3099 thesis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lc-block\" editable=\"rich\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>French or Spanish Majors<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Students majoring in French\/Spanish, who have maintained a B+ average or above in the level two language courses or a B+ average or better in one or more level three Translation courses in the relevant language, may submit a&nbsp;<strong>Translation<\/strong>, duly approved and supervised, in fulfillment of this requirement. For further details, please see the section on &quot;Guidelines for Translations as a HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies Alternative&quot; in the HUMN3099 Guidelines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"lc-block\" editable=\"rich\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Literatures in English Majors<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Students in Literatures in English may opt to substitute two of the following approved Level III courses within the same discipline for their HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table align=\"center\" border=\"1\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"1\" style=\"width:507px;\" width=\"507\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>&nbsp;<strong>Alternatives for Literatures in English Students:<\/strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t&nbsp;LITS3304, LITS3501, LITS3502, LITS3601, LITS3602, LITS3603<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT: Students taking approved alternatives should note that these two courses cannot be any one of the compulsory courses required for the Major.&nbsp;&nbsp; Students taking approved alternatives should note that these cannot be counted within the nine credits (3 courses) of Level III courses required for the Major.<\/strong><br \/>\nThe alternative courses for Literatures in English&nbsp;<u>MUST be done in the final year,<\/u>&nbsp;one in semester I and one in semester II.&nbsp; Students should&nbsp; register for the courses on CHOL as normal plus indicate their intention to substitute the courses by writing to the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Education, by the end of the second week in September.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Creative Writing Project:<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents in Literatures in English may opt to do a Creative Writing Project for their study. For further information on this, contact&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:nicola.hunte@cavehill.uwi.edu\">nicola.hunte@cavehill.uwi.edu<\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Thesis Guidelines<\/strong>:<br \/>\nThe HUMN3099 guidelines booklet includes important information on choosing your topic, regulations, format and presentation, important deadline dates etc. Download the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/Resources\/Final-HUMN-3099-Guidelines-24-25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Guidelines for the HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies<\/a><u>.<\/u>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Steps to Registering for HUMN3099<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents taking HUMN3099 are normally required to register their topic in the semester (i.e.semester II) preceeding the year in which they will be registering for the course.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lc-block\" editable=\"rich\">\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/humn3099.wufoo.com\/forms\/sakijlx1u6qun6\/\" target=\"_blank\">Click here<\/a> to complete and submit your topic and proposal online. This is to be submitted no later than August 31, 2023.<\/li>\n<li>Meet with Departmental Representatives &#8211; check your&nbsp;@mycavehill&nbsp;email, e-learning, or the departmental notice boards for the date and time of meeting.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/Resources\/HUMN3099-Topic-Registration-Form-2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Register your topic<\/a> &#8211;&nbsp; AFTER your topic has been approved at the Departmental level, you will be asked to submit the&nbsp;<strong>TRF-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/Resources\/HUMN3099-Topic-Registration-Form-2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Thesis Registration Form<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;(different from CHOL registration).&nbsp; The form will be available online.<\/li>\n<li>The form&nbsp;should be returned via email to <a href=\"mailto:humanities@cavehill.uwi.edu\">humanities@cavehill.uwi.edu<\/a>&nbsp;by the stipulated deadline.<\/li>\n<li>Take advantage of the summer break to make a head start on your paper.<\/li>\n<li>Register for the course on CHOL during the normal registration period (August-September). Note that you should also register for this course again in semester II (January-February).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Post Registration<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"lc-block\" editable=\"rich\">\n<ul>\n<li>Keep checking the notice board or email for when you should collect your copy of the registration form from the Faculty Office (this will indicate who your supervisor\/examiners is\/are).<\/li>\n<li>A list with the name of your supervisors will also be posted on the notice board outside the Departmental office. This will also be forwarded to your email.<\/li>\n<li>The title (not topic) of your paper may be changed only with the expressed approval of your supervisor.
