Continuing and Professional Development for Educators

Apart from its regular programmes in initial teacher education (Associate Degree in Education), the JBTE has recently embarked on offering short courses for educators. We believe that after their initial programme of training, educators need to constantly engage in professional development (PD) to upgrade and update their knowledge and skills in order to stay current and to continue to provide quality services in the field of education.
Consequently, the JBTE is committed to identifying, developing and delivering programmes and courses that can provide opportunities for educators to access PD. We provide programmes and courses at the request of clients, as well as those that we believe would be beneficial to the region, based on our expert knowledge, on our research and on international trends.

Awards earned:
  • Certificates of Participation (requires attendance and participation in activities)
  • Certificates of Achievement (requires attendance, participation and the completion of graded assessments)

Professional Development Short Courses (On Request)

Early Childhood Care and Development Practitioners (Currently Running)

JBTE - Continuing Programmes

This programme has two components:

  • Early Childhood Care & Development Training Course (60-hours)
This component consists of 30 hours of training in knowledge and hands-on engagement in best practices for early childhood classrooms, along with 30 hours of classroom practice. The 30 hours of training takes the form of workshop-like activities spread over 6 days. The classroom practicum is spread over a three-month period. Meeting the specified standards for this aspect of the programme contributes to participants being awarded a Certificate of Achievement.
  • Access Programme with Courses in Mathematics and English (5 months)
The access programme is designed for ECCD practitioners who are desirous of entering the Associate Degree in Education (ADE) - Early Childhood Education programme regulated by the JBTE, but who do not meet the regular matriculation requirements (five subject passes at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) level, including English Language and Mathematics).  The aim of the programme is to provide qualifications in English Language and Mathematics that can be used for consideration for entry to the ADE - Early Childhood Education programme.

Certificate in Reading Instruction (Commissioned by the OECS Commission) – Coming Soon

This certificate course is in response to the need for continuing professional development for teachers of reading in early school grades. It provides an opportunity for untrained teachers to acquire knowledge and skills in reading instruction; for teachers who were trained many years ago to update their skills; for recently trained teachers to strengthen their skills or anyone who is generally interested in the teaching of reading in the early grades. The overall expectation is for teachers of reading who participate in the course to update and upgrade their classroom practices to the benefit of their students.
