I know, from conversations with friends and discussions online, that not every university experience is a good one. Sometimes, these spaces can be unpleasant and unaccommodating, and the very structure of such institutions can deter even the most impassioned and creative minds from further study.

Fortunately, my time at UWI, Cave Hill has been a good one – bereft, in my experience, of these issues. Call me biased, but I attribute this to that fact that I was a student from the Faculty of Humanities and Education – which I found to be incredibly rewarding and enriching.

When I first enrolled in 2019, I knew that I wanted to study Literatures in English. However, I wanted to pursue another subject alongside it, and I felt lost and anxious trying to figure out what I could or should do. During this rough beginning, the patience and support I received from the faculty office really reassured me and put my mind at ease. Ultimately (and despite my fears), I felt encouraged to pick up what would become my second major — French.

My pleasant experience also extends to both my teachers and peers – who created an environment that allowed and challenged me to learn and grow. Not only were my teachers engaging, dedicated, and empathetic, but my classmates were kind and inspiring. I feel really lucky to have shared space with such articulate and thoughtful minds, and in spite of the challenges arising from the nature of these courses of study, the pandemic, and my personal life, I felt motivated to continue pushing forward.

As cliché as it sounds, I truly felt inspired to do my best.
