Teaching Areas: Currently teaches Portuguese (all levels), Brazilian Culture and Film.
Can also teach German (all levels), Literature, Linguistics, Papiamentu for Beginners.
Biography: Marco Schaumloeffel was born in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and studied German, Portuguese and Literature at the Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos) and Linguistics and Dialectology at the Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR). Before coming to Cave Hill in 2005, he worked for the German Goethe Institute and a Swiss School in Curitiba, Brazil (1994-2002) and as Brazilian Lecturer at the University of Ghana in Accra, Ghana (2003-2005). From 2001 to 2013 he was one of the five elected members in the board of the International Association of Teachers of German (IDV), which represents over 250,000 German teachers, lecturers and professors worldwide. He was IDV webmaster and editor of the periodicals “IDV-Magazin” and “IDV aktuell”. Since 2014, he is a member of the CXC Portuguese Panel. Amongst other roles, he is moderator of the CSEC and CCSLC Portuguese examination papers and CXC Assistant Chief Examiner.
Research:

Tabom – The Afro-Brazilian returnees to Ghana, German and Brazilian Dialectology, Brazilian Film and Culture, Brazilian Standard and Vernacular Portuguese, Creole Languages, Papiamentu, Papiá Kristang, use of new technologies in language learning.

Additional Information:

Marco Schaumloeffel also does technical translations (English and German to Portuguese) as well as translation of novels from German into Portuguese (e.g “The White Massai” by C. Hofmann and “An exclusive love” by J. Adoriján) and from English into Portuguese ("The Pope's Jews", by Gordon Thomas). Since its inception, he is a team member of the UWI Translation Bureau. More recently, he became member of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Portuguese Panel.
He regularly volunteers and supports the Ark - Animal Welfare Society of Barbados.
