About the Programme

Learn the science of language! 
 
Apply to do an exciting Bachelor of Arts degree with a major or minor in Linguistics at the Cave Hill Campus of The UWI in Barbados. 

What Will I Study?

You will discover: 
  • how we learn language, whether as children or adults 
  • how language varies based on our age, gender, social background and regional origin  
  • how linguists trace the history of language, especially in the Caribbean 
  • how we use the scientific method to study language objectively 
  • how language attitudes affect communities

Research

Our faculty does research across the discipline of Linguistics. We focus on Creole Linguistics and Applied Linguistics with a special interest in the languages and dialects of the Caribbean islands.

12 courses approved by the Faculty of Humanities & Education must be taken.

  1. Descriptive Linguistics (Phonology, Syntax, Semantics) 
  1. Sociolinguistics 
  1. Applied Linguistics  
  1. Creole Linguistics
