Congratulations to Ms. Zoanne Evans on her literary achievement
Zoanne Evans captured the Prime Minister’s Award at the 23rd annual Frank Collymore Literary Endowment Awards. This prize is awarded to the submission which best portrays Barbados in a unique light. Ms. Evans’ historically correct entry titled Tamiesha’s Lesson takes the reader on an adventure packed journey back to post emancipation Barbados of 1840 where the young protagonist Tameisha Rouse, who hates school, meets an ex-slave girl called Roxanna, who can neither read nor write. Roxanna longs to get an education and be free of the constraints of a racist society where she has no future and her encounter with Tameisha changes Tameisha’s outlook forever. Ms. Evans hopes to publish her work and have it distributed throughout the island’s schools in an effort to teach the youth the importance of staying in school and of knowing the struggles of their forefathers; struggles which afforded them the rights and privileges which they now enjoy, but often take for granted.
