Ms. L. Amanda Cumberbatch

Lecturer in Theatre Arts

Department: EBCCI

Actor, director, playwright, theatre-in-education (T.I.E) specialist. I have acted in over 30 plays in the Caribbean and its diaspora. Most notably, I held lead roles in Cross-Caribbean’s ‘The Final Truth?’ (2000-2003), and Kickdust Productions’ ‘House of Landship’ (2012-2013) which was Barbados’ national theatre production at CARIFESTA II, Suriname. I scripted and directed The Gap Theatre’s 'Alleluia Pork Chops', which was also Barbados’ national theatre production at CARIFESTA XIII, Barbados, and am the director of two NIFCA Daphne Joseph-Hackett Award of Excellence in Drama plays. As Head of Tiger Eye T.I.E, I designed and facilitated drama based interventions in the public and private sectors, including the SAGICOR funded healthy lifestyles ‘A Play in a Day’ event, which toured primary schools under the auspices of the Non-Communicable Diseases Committee, Ministry of Health, Barbados, and a two year customer service training event with Supercentre Supermarkets.

Research Areas

My interests are in devising and performing the Caribbean text. My theatre work at The Gap Theatre (‘Alleluia Pork Chops’) and at the National Cultural Foundation (‘South’, which was performed at the Museum of London, Docklands, England) were both acclaimed national productions.

T.I.E has also led to over 5 years of rehabilitative prison drama work with groups at Her Majesty’s Prison, Dodds, and the inmates have been numerously awarded at Barbados’ National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA), including being recipients of the Daphne Joseph-Hackett Award of Excellence in Drama, the Earl Warner Prize for Directing, and the Alfred Pragnell Best Actor’s trophy.
