About the Programme

All qualified applicants to the BFA Creative Arts (Dance, FIlm, Theatre), BFA Dance, BFA Film, BFA Music, BA Music with Education will be invited to an interview and/or audition which forms part of the assessment of eligibility to enter the Faculty. You will also be requested to submit your own creative work prior to the interview/audition. The guidelines for submission of creative work and for attending interviews/auditions are presented below or in the Applicant Brief.

Prior to Interview/Audition
You are required to submit before your interview:
1. A one-page statement of your interest and goals within the field of dance. Please address the following questions in your statement: What and who are you inspired by? Why? What do you wish to challenge or change through dance? What do you wish to express through dance? What are your career goals in dance?

Interview and Audition Day—Applicants in Barbados
Each prospective student for the Dance programme will be invited to an interview and an audition, scheduled on the same date. Candidates must wear clothing that allows for the full and comfortable movement of the body. Hair must be tied back, no jewelry. Be prepared to dance in bare feet.

Applicants will be asked to complete the following in order to assess their readiness for the BFA in Dance:
(i) an Afro-Contemporary dance class: a warm-up, movement across the floor, a repertory phrase.

(ii) a two minute self-choreographed or repertory solo prepared by the applicant.  All dance styles are welcomed. 

(iii) an interview with academic staff in dance.

Applicants should arrive at least 20 minutes prior to their appointments to allow for independent warm-up.
 
Interview and Audition Day—Regional/International Applicants
In order to assess their readiness for the BFA in Dance, each prospective regional/international student for the Dance programme will be invited to an interview via Zoom or other video chat platform, and asked to submit either a digital video file, or a Youtube or Vimeo link to a recording of the following: 

(i) a dance class featuring the applicant learning from a teacher of their choice.

(ii) a two minute self-choreographed or repertory solo.  All dance styles are welcomed. 

In the video, candidates must wear clothing that allows for the full and comfortable movement of the body. Hair must be tied back, no jewelry.

Prior to Interview/Audition

1. a one-page statement which includes your background within the field of film. Please also address the following questions: What and who are you inspired by? Why? What do you wish to challenge or change through film? What do you wish to express through film? What are your career goals in film?

2. One of the following:
(i) A three-minute selection of motion picture work (film/video/animation) in which you played a key creative role (writer, director, cinematographer, photographer, editor). Be sure to include production team credits in which you and your role in the production is noted or

(ii) A selection of 10 photographic works (a photo-essay, a photo-story and/or a portfolio) in which you played a key creative role (writer, director, photographer, editor). Be sure to include production team credits in which you and your role in the production is noted.

(iii) Three film clips (5 min max each) that motivate you as a filmmaker, along with brief description of why the each clip inspires you.

Applicants residing outside of Barbados may record their audition materials and send them via email as instructed. 

Interview Day
All applicants intending to specialize in Film are required to attend an interview. You will be notified of date and time.

Interview and Audition Day
Applicants intending to specialize in Theatre are required to audition and attend an interview on the same day. For the audition, applicants are asked to arrive prepared to present the following:

i) two (2) prepared actor’s pieces, one of which must be a monologue. Each piece must be no longer than two minutes. Note carefully that one of the pieces must be from the work of an author/playwright/poet etc., whether published or unpublished, other than the applicant. 

ii) A song or a segment of a song of no more than two minutes.

Interview and Audition Day
Applicants entering the Music programme are required to audition and attend an interview scheduled on the same day. The audition includes:

 – Performance of two contrasting pieces; “contrasting” can be defined in different ways (e.g., lyrical vs. technical, early music vs. twentieth century, self-composed vs. a cover tune, etc.).

– Demonstration of technical competence including scales, chords, rhythms, arpeggios, etc.

– Sight-reading: Performing a piece of music at sight.
