CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)

Student Notices

All Late Withdrawals, Thesis Extensions and Requests to De-register must be submitted on or before April 30, 2020
24/04/2020

The following communiqué was issued to all students by the Campus Registrar, Kenneth Walters.

We trust that you and your loved ones continue to be safe during this COVID-19 pandemic.

We hope that you have been able to participate in your online classes, and we remind you to reach out to your lecturers if you are experiencing any difficulties.

We recognize that even within the online facilities we have provided, the COVID-19 pandemic has created layers of stress that may be affecting your studies. In an effort to support your success during this very challenging time we would like to outline the various policies which govern your student status and to explain how you may go about making requests for any necessary changes to your registration, based on decisions that have been taken by the executive management and the assurances given to you by the Principal.

Please review the following situations carefully and submit all requests to your Faculty Office, copied to Student Affairs, Admissions (admissions@cavehill.uwi.edu) on or before Thursday April 30, 2020.

Situation 1 – Late Withdrawal

You believe that while you can adequately complete some of your courses, you are unable to continue all of them, and so wish to withdraw from one or more courses which you may choose to complete in the future.

Process

Under normal circumstances, a student who wishes to withdraw from courses after the normal Add/Drop period must request special permission from the Dean. A student who is granted late withdrawal is assigned a late withdrawal (LW) grade for the course(s) and may re-register for the course(s) at a subsequent offering. A LW grade does not negatively affect your GPA. You are encouraged to consult your Faculty about whether or not coursework marks can be retained.

If you wish to apply for late withdrawal from one or more courses, please submit the below form, clearly indicating the course(s) from which you wish to withdraw.

Late Withdrawal Form

The deadline to apply for late withdrawal is Thursday, April 30, 2020.

Situation 2 – De-register from one or more courses

You believe that you can adequately complete some of your courses, but you are unable to continue all of them and wish to de-register from one or more courses.

Process

Under normal circumstances, a student who wishes to de-register from a course without penalty must do so within the normal Add/Drop period. If you choose to de-register from one or more courses your coursework marks will not be retained if/when you re-register for these courses.

If you wish to de-register from one or more courses, you must inform your Dean in writing by Thursday, April 30, 2020 stating the course(s) from which you wish to de-register.

Situation 3 – Extensions (Research Papers/Theses)

You believe that you need additional time to complete your research paper/thesis and would like to be able to re-register in the following semester.

Process

Extensions are granted on a course by course basis by the thesis supervisor. Students permitted extensions that go beyond the end of the semester would be awarded an IP (In progress) grade and expected to re-register and complete in the semester following.

If you wish to apply for an extension of the submission date of a research paper or thesis, apply to your supervisor in writing by Thursday April 30, 2020.

Finally, we encourage you to continue to follow the recommendations of your health authorities related to COVID-19, and remind you to continue checking the Campus website and mobile apps for updates.

We wish you every success during the remainder of the academic year.  Stay safe and be well.
