David Bulbulia

Co-Director of the Confucius Institute (Barbados)

David Bulbulia is a Barbadian career Foreign Service Officer with an academic background in Sociology and Political Science and post graduate qualification in International Relations. In addition, he has been exposed to a wide range of specialized courses in management and related disciplines including finance, human resources, leadership and organizational behavior, public policy, project cycle and knowledge management. Such exposure, together with practical experience, has allowed him to develop a coherent perspective on the requisites for managing the operations of the Barbados Foreign Service and aligned areas where the Caribbean interfaces with international partners.

Professor Nie Lu

 Co-Director of the Confucius Institute (Barbados)

Professor Nie Lu is currently the Chinese Co-Director of Confucius Institute, Cave Hill Campus, the University of the West Indies. She received her Ph.D. from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and began lecturing in the China University of Political Science and Law in 2002. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2004 and then Professor in 2017. Professor Nie Lu served as Deputy Dean (2006-2015) and then Dean (2015-2018) of the Department of Political Science. She is also a member of the Academic Committee and the Academic Degree Committee of the School of Political Science and Public Administration.




 
 



Talita Thorpe

Mrs. Talita Thorpe is a Barbadian national, and a member of staff at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus. During 16 plus years at the University, she has worked in various departments such as Registry Records Management, Office Management, Chronic Disease Research Centre and the Principal’s Office. Mrs. Thorpe officially joined the Confucius Institute’s team as Stenographer-Clerk in October of 2015. 






 


Samantha R. Alleyne

Ms. Samantha R. Alleyne is a Stenographer Clerk in the Confucius Institute with a Bachelor's of Science from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.  She joined the Institute in 2018, and assists in administrative and clerical duties, as well as provides support to the Insitute's Co-Directors.











 



Alexandria Payne

Ms. Alexandria Payne is a Barbadian national and one of the Confucius Institute’s Full-Time Chinese Language Teachers. She graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese Language after 6 years living and studying in Wuhan, China. Alexandria holds Level 6 of the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), China’s equivalent of ESL certification and has experience as both a private English and Mandarin tutor. She eagerly looks forward to assisting the team at the Institute in the promotion of Chinese Language and Culture in Barbados. 






 
 



Renée Boyce-Drakes

Mrs. Renée R. Boyce-Drakes is a Chinese scholarship winner who studied International Economic Law at the University of Nanjing. She has taught Chinese privately and at the University of the West Indies for many years after graduating and returning home in 2003.  Renée has a warm appreciation for Chinese Language and Culture and enjoys sharing her knowledge with her students. 







 



Tyrone R. Yearwood

Mr. Tyrone R. Yearwood, also known as Ye Tai Long in Chinese, is a Barbadian national who was awarded one of the three 2009 Chinese government scholarships, Mr. Yearwood went on to receive his BA and MA from two of China’s most reputable institutions of higher education. He has also worked extensively in China, in roles ranging from; secondary education, social science research and in large multi-national companies such as FILA, ANTA and PEAK etc. Currently Tyrone is a Chinese teacher at the Confucius Institute at the University of West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus in Barbados.

Li Qingmo

Qingmo Li, has a graduate degree with ten years of Chinese teaching experience.
Mainly engaged in Chinese language teaching, Chinese culture and art teaching.
In 2020, she won the Excellence Award in the individual competition of the first Global Chinese Micro lesson Competition. She also won the "Excellent Instructor" of the 2020 "Chinese Bridge" Global Chinese Language Conference for Foreigners cloud Dubbing Competition of Chinese Film and Television Works.

Wang Fenghe

English name: Shelly
Chinese name:Wang Fenghe
Position:Chinese language volunteer teacher
 
WANG Fenghe, also known as Shelly in English, is pursuing her graduate degree in International Chinese Language Education at Minzu University of China. She holds a bachelor's degree from Jiangxi University of Science and Technology. From January 2023 to June 2024, Fenghe has been working as an online Chinese teacher, having taught students from many countries, including the United States, Singapore, Japan, Uzbekistan, and Mauritania. Currently, she is serving as a Chinese language volunteer teacher at the Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus in Barbados.

 Wan Zidan

English name: Sandra
Ms. Sandra Wan is from Sichuan, home of the panda. She studying Teaching Chinese to Foreign Speakers at the Graduate School of China University of Political Science and Law. From May to June in 2024, she was trained at Tianjin Normal University and received the certificate of Chinese Language Teaching. She is currently a Chinese language volunteer teacher at the Confucius Institute at UWI in Barbados.

Cao Chunyan

English name: Echo

Ms. Cao Chunyan is a Chinese Teacher from Hangzhou City of Zhejiang Province. Her undergraduate major is Teaching foreigners Chinese as their second language. She got her master degree of education from Ashland University in Ohio in 2020. From September 2016 to July 2018, she worked as a Chinese language volunteer teacher in Benin, where she taught Basic Chinese, Writing Chinese, and Chinese Language Arts. She is currently a Chinese language teacher at the Confucius Institute at UWI, Cave Hill campus in Barbados.

Hu Wei

English name: Wendy

Ms. Hu Wei is a Chinese Teacher from Weihai City of Shandong Province. She graduated from Hainan Normal University in 2018 where she majored in Chinese international education. From January 2019 to February 2020, she taught Chinese at the Confucius Institute of the University of Pernambuco, Brazil, where she taught university students and overseas-born Chinese. She is currently a Chinese language teacher at the Confucius Institute at UWI, Cave Hill campus in Barbados.

Ma Wenxin

English name: Dolly

Ms. Dolly Ma is a Chinese Teacher from  Shandong Province. She graduated from Changchun in 2018 where she majored in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. From August 2018 to June 2019, she was a Chinese volunteer teacher in Mongolia, where she worked in the Mongolian Yucai broadcasting Confucius classroom. She is currently a volunteer local Chinese language teacher at the Confucius Institute at UWI, Cave Hill campus in Barbados, having worked previously as a volunteer Chinese teacher from October 2019 to October 2020. Dolly is skilled in paper cutting, Chinese stitching, Chinese knots and Chinese cuisine.

Ma Jincai

English name: Léo Ma

Mr. Léo Ma, also known as Ma Jincai in Chinese, is originally from Qinghai Province and formatively educated in Shandong Province and in Beijing, subsequently, majors both in English and law at China university of political science and law. After being trained academically at Tianjin Normal University, now he works as a voluntary teacher, teaching Chinese in the Confucius Institute at UWI, Cave Hill campus in Barbados.

Zhang Yanhong

English name: Jane

Zhang Yanhong, associate professor in China University of Political Science & Law, Chinese-English bilingual teacher in journalism-communication; senior school English teacher during 1990-1999;seconded by Chinese Foreign Ministry to the two Chinese Consulates General as a consul in Medan and Milan during 2012-2016;bachelor in English language & literature at Hubei Normal University, master in journalism and doctor in communication both at Wuhan University.

Ma Yihua

English name: Amber

Ms. Amber Ma, also known as Ma Yihua in Chinese, from Xianyang City of Shaanxi Province, has a master's degree of Teaching Chinese to Foreign Speakers in Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU). She has teaching and tutoring experience of students from several countries since 2017.During 2020 to 2023, she served as teaching assistant and Chinese teacher in BLCU and Online school of Chinese Union. She is currently a Chinese volunteer teacher at the Confucius Institute at UWI, Cave Hill campus in Barbados.
