Chinese Language Courses

The Confucius Institute conducts various Chinese language courses at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. The courses do not offer university credit although students will be awarded certification. Teaching time is 2 to 4 hours per week.

Elementary Chinese
This course provides oral practice related to scenario-based conversations. This includes the Chinese phonetic system, simple conversations, basic vocabulary and sentence patterns.

Intermediate Chinese
This course aims at expanding students’ Chinese vocabulary and giving them a better understanding of Chinese grammar.

Advanced Chinese
The aim of this course is to help participants to improve the understanding of long texts written in Chinese and to further expand vocabulary. Comprehensive learning (reading, listening, speaking and writing) will be the focus of the class. This class requires a high level of participation from the student.

Business Chinese
This course is mainly focused on communicative situations in a business environment.  Some prior knowledge of Chinese characters is recommended but not mandatory.

Travel Chinese
This course provides an introduction to Chinese cities and famous scenic spots. The course provides oral practice related to scenario-based conversation.

Chinese Characters
This course examines Chinese characters and expressions. Participants will learn some pinyin and oral Chinese. Participants will also get an opportunity to practice with some very short passages written in Chinese and to learn Chinese calligraphy.

VIP One-on-One Class
This course will be designed according to the requirements of the student. Class time depends of the requirements of the student.

News & Events

At the beginning of 2021, the Confucius Institute (C.I.) bid farewell to its Chinese Volunteer teachers. The C.I. is embarking on a new phase, utilizing regional persons, qualified in Chinese Language and Culture to teach Mandarin.

The Chinese Testing International Co. Ltd., at its last meeting, approved the following fees for the Confucius Institute, University of the West Indies, effective April 21, 2020.

On the 10th of November 2020, the Confucius Institute (CI) participated in the online Open House, as part of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, held online via Zoom.  

On the 30th of October, 2020, members of the Barbados Public Library welcomed the Co-Directors and staff members of the Cave Hill Campus Confucius Institute to their Bridgetown location, when, in an effort to create better understanding of China in Barbados, the Confucius Institute made a donation to the National Library Service of books and DVDs on various aspects of Chinese history and culture.
