The 2023 “Chinese Bridge” Competition Barbados
 
   The Confucius Institute, of The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, in cooperation with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Barbados, presents the 23rd   annual “Chinese Bridge” Competition!
   This competition seeks to provide a platform for Barbadian students to showcase their Chinese proficiency, exchange knowledge with peers, improve their understanding of Chinese culture as well as increase their interest in learning the language. Candidates will be assessed by the following:
  • Chinese language proficiency
  • Knowledge of China
  • Chinese cultural skills: Chinese song, dance, folk arts, acrobatics, musical instruments, calligraphy, Chinese paintings, paper-cutting, martial arts, traditional sports, etc.
  • Comprehensive learning ability: practical application of ability through training.
 
 
 
Categories
  • Primary (ages 6-10)
  • Secondary (ages 13-18)
  • Tertiary (ages 18-30)
     
Eligible candidates
  • Residents of Barbados
  • Native English speakers
  • Students raised in Barbados
  • Students with no prior residency in China
  • Students who fall within the age ranges above
  • Current students in Barbados
     
Winners of previous competitions are not permitted to participate in two consecutive competitions.
 
Themes
  • Primary- “Chinese, Joy & Fun快乐中文”
  • Secondary- “Flying High with Chinese追梦中文,不负韶华”
  • Tertiary- “One World, One Family天下一家”
     
 
 
Competition Criteria
Primary
1 minute live presentation of a brief self-introduction, a talent demonstration showcasing the theme “Chinese, Joy & Fun快乐中文” and any other Chinese related skills example, dance, martial arts, calligraphy, paper-cutting etc.
 
Secondary
2 minute live presentation of a brief self-introduction, a talent demonstration showcasing the theme “Flying High with Chinese追梦中文,不负韶华” and any other Chinese related skills example, dance, martial arts, calligraphy, paper-cutting etc.
Tertiary
  • A 2 minute on the spot speech in Chinese focusing on the theme “One World, One Family 天下一家”
  • A live showcase of a talent performance (no more than 5 minutes)
  • Chinese Cultural knowledge quiz
     
Prizes
First Prize
Primary- $200 gift voucher
Secondary- $250 gift voucher
Tertiary- $300 gift voucher
 
Second Prize
Primary- $150 gift voucher
Secondary- $200 gift voucher
Tertiary- $250 gift voucher

Third Prize
Primary- $100 gift voucher
Secondary- $150 gift voucher
Tertiary- $200 gift voucher
 
Please Note
 
  • Primary and Secondary schools will compete internally.
  • All candidates will receive a participation prize.
  • The First Prize winners in the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary categories also have the possibility of traveling to China to compete in the Grand Competition in Beijing China.
