Confucius Institute Donation to the Bridgetown Library
04/11/2020
On the 30th of October, 2020, members of the Barbados Public Library welcomed the Co-Directors and staff members of the Cave Hill Campus Confucius Institute to their Bridgetown location, when, in an effort to create better understanding of China in Barbados, the Confucius Institute made a donation to the National Library Service of books and DVDs on various aspects of Chinese history and culture.

Acting Deputy Director Jennifer Yarde gave the welcoming address, thanking the Confucius Institute for their donation. She emphasised that in this global village, the learning of different languages and cultures is paramount to national development. She added, “… it will [also] help our children to learn and appreciate the lifestyles of other people”.  She indicated that this donation, along with the Chinese Mandarin language and culture programme which will commence on November 4, 2020, will be pivotal in the quest for Barbados to become a multilingual society. She concluded her remarks by hinting that this gesture by the Confucius Institute may signal the development of a Chinese collection at the library.
Following this, Co-Directors of the Confucius Institute, David Bulbulia and Dr Renyan Li expressed their delight in joining the National Library Service in initiating the activity, stating also that they see this as the start of a long-lasting relationship. Mr Bulbulia commented on the turnout in registrations for the Chinese language classes, saying he was very impressed that some eighty nine (89) persons had registered. He concluded by saying that in correlation with the policies drafted by governments past and present, the Confucius Institute will endeavour to push the dream of having a bilingual Barbados.
The group from the Confucius Institute was then given a tour of the Main Library. Also present were Librarian Maureen Kellman, John Downes, the Library Assistant responsible for the co-ordination of events and programmes at the Library, Senior Librarians Carl Adamson and Loleta Parris, and Graphic Artist Amour Chandler.
