The 2024 Barbados “Chinese Bridge” Competition

The Confucius Institute, of The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, in cooperation with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Barbados, presents the   annual “Chinese Bridge” Competition!

   This competition seeks to provide a platform for Barbadian students to showcase their Chinese proficiency, exchange knowledge with peers, improve their understanding of Chinese culture as well as increase their interest in learning the language.

Candidates will be assessed by the following:
•    Chinese language proficiency
•    Knowledge of China
•    Chinese cultural skills: Chinese song, dance, folk arts, acrobatics, musical instruments, calligraphy, Chinese paintings, paper-cutting, martial arts, traditional sports, etc.
•    Comprehensive learning ability: practical application of ability through training.

Categories
•    Primary (ages 6-12)
•    Secondary (ages 12-18)
•    Tertiary (ages 18-30)

Eligible Candidates
•    Residents of Barbados
•    Native English speakers
•    Students raised in Barbados
•    Students with no prior residency in China
•    Students who fall within the age ranges stated above
•    Current students in Barbados

Winners of previous competitions are not permitted to participate in two consecutive competitions.

Themes
•    Primary- “Chinese, Joy & Fun 快乐中文”
•    Secondary- “Flying High with Chinese 追梦中文,不负韶华”
•    Tertiary- “One World, One Family 天下一家”

Competition Content and Score Setting
Primary
1.Self-introduction in Chinese(20 points)
Contestants will introduce themselves in Chinese [no more than 2 minutes].

2.Question & Answer(20points)
Each contestant will draw and answer a question [no more than 3 minutes].

3.Talent Show(40 points)
Contestants will show perform a talent which may include Chinese music (including songs and musical instruments), dance, folk art, calligraphy, painting, martial arts etc. according to their own ability [no more than 5 minutes].

4.General Deportment(20 points)
Judges will give points to the contestants based on their overall appearance, conduct and manner during the competition.

Secondary
1.Self-introduction in Chinese(10 points)
Contestants will introduce themselves in Chinese [no more than 2 minutes].

2.Keynote Speech(30 points)
Contestants will make a speech based on the theme of the competition [no more than 5 minutes].

3.Question & Answer(15 points)
Each contestant will draw and answer questions pertaining to China and Chinese Culture [no more than 3 minutes].

4.Talent Show(30 points)
Contestants will show perform a talent which may include Chinese music (including songs and musical instruments), dance, folk art, calligraphy, painting, martial arts etc. according to their own ability [no more than 5 minutes].

5.General Deportment(15 points)

Tertiary

Prizes
There will be one first, second and third place winner.
Contestants who win the first, second and third place prizes will be awarded certificates and prizes. Participants placing fourth and up will also be awarded token prizes.

Please Note
•    All candidates will receive a participation prize.
•    The First Prize winners in the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary categories also have the possibility of traveling to China to compete in the Grand Competition in Beijing, China.
