\t\t\t\t\t\tFirst-Ever Protected Area Management Effectiveness Assessment Conducted for the Barbados Marine Reserve<\/u>
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Caribbean Protected Areas Gateway<\/strong> along with the National Conservation Commission (NCC<\/strong>) 
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tco-hosted a series of workshops on Protected Area Management Effectiveness Assessment for the Barbados<\/strong> — alias Folkestone — Marine Reserve<\/strong> on Thursday 20th, Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th August 2020, at the Solutions Centre, the University of the West Indies (UWI).<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\tThe workshops, the first of its kind in Barbados, were intended to: comprehensively review the operations, challenges and issues of the Barbados Marine Reserve (BMR); to assess the current state of management at the BMR; and ultimately improve the management of the reserve to provide a well-managed Marine Protected Area with services for both locals and tourists alike to enjoy.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\tParticipants ranging from key government ministries, stakeholders of the Barbados Marine Reserve, educational institutions, and non-governmental organisations actively participated in the assessment of the management of the reserve. <\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\tThe process was led by the NCC, with the assessment itself being facilitated by the Caribbean Protected Areas Gateway, the regional resource hub for biodiversity and protected area data, information, tools and services, which is hosted by the UWI, through the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management (BIOPAMA), programme.
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThe results and recommendations of the assessment will be utilised by the management agency to identify next steps and the way forward regarding improving management of the BMR.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Caribbean Protected Areas Gateway continues to work in close collaboration with the management agency of the BMR and other related biodiversity and environmental related organisations. This is being done to improve the long-term conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in Barbados.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Caribbean Protected Areas Gateway (CPAG) joined Latin America and the Caribbean in celebrating the inaugural \u2018Day of the Protected Areas<\/strong>\u2019.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t In 2019, a proposal requesting the declaration of 17th October as the Day of the Protected Areas of Latin America and the Caribbean<\/strong> was brought before the Executive Committee of the Third Latin America and the Caribbean Protected Area Congress (III CAPLAC<\/strong>). The Congress held in Lima, Peru, under the theme \u201cSolutions for Welfare and Sustainable Development<\/strong>\u201d provided an opportunity to highlight the actors linked to the management of protected areas. \t\t\t\t\t\tDuring the closing ceremony of the Congress, the 17th of October was declared as the Day of Protected Areas in Latin America and the Caribbean. Following up from the Lima Declaration, the week of 12th-18th October 2020 was dedicated to celebrating protected and conserved areas and the role they play across the region, their importance for the well-being of people and sustainable development in the region.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\tThe concept of celebrating protected areas was not limited to those formally recognised for their conservation but includes everyone who appreciates spaces for their natural and cultural value. The effort of organisations and persons who care for and enjoy the natural and cultural diversity of the protected and conserved areas of Latin America and the Caribbean was also celebrated.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Day of the Protected Areas received strong support from IUCN through its offices for South America and for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, as well as its commissions – WCPA (World Commission on Protected Areas) and CEC (Commission on Education and Communication), RedParques (Latin American Network for Technical Cooperation in National Parks, others Protected Areas, Wild Flora, and Fauna), FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and others.<\/p>\n
