Impacts of COVID-19 on the Barbados fishing industry
More than COVID-19 itself, the responses of various Caribbean governments and societies to COVID-19 may be having different impacts upon women and men in fishing industries. Women and men in fisheries may also be responding differently. Using the sustainable livelihoods framework, GIFT is collecting information on the impacts of COVID-19 on fisherfolk and the fishing industry in Barbados. Findings to come soon! |

- The paper documents the collective action of women in the Central Fish Processors Association (CFPA) in preparing to make practical interventions for improvements to their working and domestic lives. It is the first research focused on organized women in the Barbados flyingfish fishery, deviating from the typical focus on men in its harvest sector.

- This case study analyses the process of formation of the Central Fish Processors Association (CFPA), its development and the benefits it has provided to its members in terms of their livelihoods and domestic lives, as well as to the flyingfish fishery more generally. Although challenges persist, it illustrates existing and emerging good practices consistent with the principles of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication.

‘Gender in Fisheries session’,71st Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI), San Andrés Island, Colombia, 5-9 November 2018
- GIFT co-leaders and a GIFT member organised this third special poster session.
- GIFT research on sharing stories of women’s fisheries livelihoods to document and mainstream gender in Caribbean fisheries was highlighted through a poster presentation, Women at work in the Barbados fishing industry: fortunes of a female forklift driver.
- The ‘Gender in Fisheries’ session was enriched by a 3-hour programme, Fishing Her, comprising panel discussions with Colombian fisherwomen on fishing knowledge of the sea and their memories of fishing; and audiovisual presentations documenting fishing activities of Raizal women.
- A 2019 wall calendar was distributed to raise awareness of the Fishing Her research.

3rd World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress (3WSFC), 22-26 October, Chiang Mai, Thailand
- GIFT members presented on Caribbean perspectives of gender in small-scale fisheries, fisher learning exchanges, understanding working women’s issues in a fisherfolk organization in Barbados, and gender transformative approaches to development in coastal and fishing communities.
- Margaret Harding (small-scale processor), proudly and ably represented the only postharvest fisheries association in Barbados – the Central Fish Processors Association (CFPA) – the subject of GIFT research in Barbados.

7th Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries (GAF-7) conference, 18-21 October in Bangkok, Thailand
- GIFT presence was quite strong through six presentations (oral and poster). We had our own Caribbean corner highlighting current GIFT research into gender in Caribbean fisheries and specifically women in the Barbados fishing industry.
- Margaret Harding, Central Fish Processors Association (CFPA), was one of only a few fisherfolk attending the conference, and as such was a point of interest for many researchers in attendance.
- The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, was a partner of GAF-7.

Developmental Research with the Central Fish Processors Association (CFPA)
- Action research in Barbados with the Central Fish Processors Association will determine problems and concerns, and what practical solutions the female members envision to enhance their fisheries livelihoods and domestic life using the three linked research frameworks of GIFT.
- This research is ongoing and has contributed to poster and oral presentations at conferences – GCFI, GAF-7 and 3WSFC) in 2017 and 2018.
- The CFPA has been the subject of journal articles published in 2020.
