The Office of Business Development (OBD) embarked on a series of
In-house Capacity Building Workshops from November 2019 to support various Faculties, Departments and Units at The University of West Indies in their efforts at generating income and becoming more entrepreneurial. The workshops are designed by Sonia Johnson, the Campus’ Business Development Officer, who is also the main facilitator.
“The Do’s and Don’ts of Securing Sponsorship for your Event” was the title of the first six-hour workshop successfully held on December 5 and 6, 2019. Twenty (20) members of the academic and administrative staff successfully completed the training. The aim of this workshop was to help participants: better understand the decision-making process of sponsors; develop sponsorship strategies and articulate their case for support; and better leverage their sponsorship transactions into longer term relationships.
A highlight of the workshop was a dynamic panel discussion in which experienced corporate sponsors gave participants important tips. The panel comprised: Mrs. Debra King - Director, Corporate Communications, CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank, Mrs. Margaret Allman-Goddard - Managing Director, Finer Points Consultants and Ms. Keri Mapp - Operations Manager, Credit Card Services, Cave Shepherd & Co Ltd.
The Campus’ Director of Student Services, Dale Lynch, presented an impactful case study on best practices and experiences with corporate sponsorship in her office. Wayne Davis, Financial Manager (Budgets & Projects), Campus Bursary informed the participants of the financial management processes and procedures for external sponsorship funds.
Given the extremely high level of satisfaction expressed by the participants in the workshop evaluation and the fact that the workshop was highly over-subscribed, the OBD intends to host another session on
“The Do’s and Don’ts of Securing Sponsorship for your Event”.
