Akin studied at the Royal Medical College of Saint Bartholomew&rsquo;s Hospital in the University of London where he attained his first graduate degree in Medicine and progressing to obtain fellowships in Internal Medicine and Pathology from both Royal College of Medicine in the United Kingdom and the College of Pathology of South Africa.&nbsp;&nbsp; Professor Abayomi is currently an Honorary Professor of The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. Please click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cavehill.uwi.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/57\/Resources\/symposium\/Abayomi-Biosketch-Barbados-Biosecurity-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for a full biography (PDF).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keynote Address<\/strong><br \/>\nWhat is biosecurity: It is the responsible custodianship of the biosphere.<br \/>\nThe United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation define biosecurity in the context of a strategic and integrated approach that encompasses the policy, regulatory frameworks, instruments and activities for analysing and managing relevant risks to human, animal and plant health, and associated risks to the environment. Biosecurity covers food safety, zoonosis, the introduction of animal and plant diseases and pests, the introduction and release of living modified organisms (LMOs) and their products (e.g. genetically modified organisms or GMOs), and the introduction and management of invasive alien species. Thus biosecurity is a holistic concept of direct relevance to the sustainability of agriculture, and wide-ranging aspects of public health and protection of the environment, including biological diversity.
