Learn the science and practice of safeguarding lives and livelihoods!
Apply to do an exciting PHD in Biosecurity & Biorisk Management at Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Barbados.

What Will I Study?

You will discover:

  • How to develop research acumen in key methodologies for biosecurity.
  • How to evaluate the global, regional, and national biosecurity issues associated with the emergence of dynamic risks to pandemics, climate change impacts, natural disasters, biodiversity loss and cyberattacks.
  • How to manage organisations and global teams engaging biosecurity threats.
  • An appreciation for the integral role biosecurity and biorisk management plays in sustainable development locally, regionally, and internationally.

Research

Our program focus will encompass Border Security & Trade, Climate Change & Its Impacts and Maritime issues/Blue Economy with a special interest in Caribbean islands.

Programme Details

  • 2 core courses (3 credits each – 6 credits)
  • 1 elective – 1 course (minimum of 3 credits) or Workshops – two (2) 2-credit workshops (4 credits)
  • A research thesis

You will do courses in:

  1. Geopolitics and Infectious Diseases
  2. Air Pollution, Climate & Human Health
  3. The Climate Infectious Nexus: Biosecurity, Climate Change & Water Risk Management

Cost – This programme is self-financed.

    • USD$15,000 per year.
    • ** Plus an additional USD $5,000 if the student is taking the (built-in) MSc. Programme tour to Geneva (optional). This includes airline travel and accommodation
