Members of the academic staff at Cave Hill can make use of the following services offered by the BDO:

  • Marketing Your Expertise
One of our primary functions is to assist you in promoting your expertise to external Government, donor, private industry and business partners so that we may increase the in-flow of training, research and consultancy income. You can help us to do so by keeping us up to date with developments in your area.
We also provide Market Intelligence on Funding and Income Generation Opportunities. As we enhance links with external partners at the corporate level, we will generate leads for funding and income generating opportunities. Our promise is to communicate these leads to you promptly and to assist you with follow-up.

  • Proposal Preparation, Contract Negotiation, Review and Monitoring
Having identified opportunities, be it for research, consultancy, advisory services or training, the BDO can coordinate or assist with the preparation of proposals and the formation of consortia for training, research or consultancy projects. The BDO can also contribute to contract negotiation and the review of contracts and agreements, to ensure that full benefit is derived from income generation opportunities and to verify that intellectual property is adequately protected. In fact, we strongly urge you to pass your contracts through the BDO for review. We will also be involved in post contract monitoring for quality assurance and contract compliance.

  • Protection of Intellectual Property
It is vital that you familiarize yourself with the UWI Intellectual Property (IP) which covers copyrightable materials and inventions. If you have made an invention during the course of your work, you should first declare it by completing an Invention Disclosure Form and forward it to the Business Development Office. It is vital that you do so before sharing information publicly about your invention. Your disclosure is the first step to making a determination to protect IP through a patent or otherwise.

  • Commercialisation of Research and Technology Transfer
This is a new, but critical emerging area of activity for the UWI. The BDO will encourage the growth of applied research activities and the utilisation of the results of University research for the benefit of the region. We can assist in this process by: assessing the commercial potential of ideas and products of research; seeking appropriate legal protection; developing business plans; contacting potential commercial partners; negotiating commercial contracts; and forming and establishing spin off companies. We are here to take care of the administrative work, which will free you to focus on the technical aspects.

  • Assistance in Developing Your Commercial or Research Projects
If you have an idea for a new income generating venture in any traditional or non-traditional academic or non-academic area, or if you would like assistance in finding funding for your research project, please do not hesitate to contact the BDO. We can assist with development of the concept, assessment of revenue opportunities, structuring the project and marketing.

  • Providing Opportunities for Learning and Discussion
From time to time, the BDO organises training workshops on intellectual property, finding research funding and grant writing. The BDO will provide fora for discussion of these and other issues related to the development of an entrepreneurial university.
