The Campus adds Accessible Transportation to Fleet

For Release Upon Receipt - Thursday, May 2, 2019

MHMTcropped-5-2-2019.jpgA new wheelchair accessible van has been added to the fleet of vehicles at the Cave Hill Campus, thanks to a generous donation from the Maria Holder Memorial Trust.

The vehicle was officially handed over to campus at a ceremony held on April 24, 2019, outside the Office of Student Services. The new acquision also marks another step in a series of efforts the Cave Hill campus is making to become a campus for all.

“This makes the clear statement that the Cave Hill Campus not only understands the needs of our more vulnerable students, those with disabilities, but will seek to respond to these needs in concrete ways,” Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal Eudine Barriteau said during remarks.

“The Campus expresses our deepest gratitude for the funds donated by the Trust which enabled us to respond to our students with disabilities’ need for specialised transport by purchasing a new wheelchair-accessible van, now appropriately rebranded. This vehicle is a most welcomed addition to our current fleet and, like all the others, is already transporting our students to and from the Campus.”

She also reminded those gathered that in 2014, the Campus’ Academic Board adopted The UWI Cave Hill Campus Student Disability Policy.

“These accommodations are geared towards enabling them to participate in all aspects of campus life, including accessibility to our various resources, services and amenities. These students, current as well as prospective, must enjoy the same level of access to every facet of campus life as their fellow students without being disadvantaged,” Barriteau continnued.

The principal added that they would continue to closely monitor the learning and leisure environment to ensure that all impediments eventually are removed.

“The Campus is happy to respond to the needs of its communities and we encourage our students to continue to let us know how we can better serve you.”
