RBC and The UWI race towards goal of raising funds for youth education

Bridgetown, Barbados – Tuesday, 30 January 2018: Today,RBC Royal Bank (Barbados) Limited together with The University of West Indies (The UWI) announced the launch of the 2018 RBC Race for the Kids in Barbados at a press conference. The UWI and RBC teamed up as of last year to co-host this charitable run in support of youth education. Both parties are determined to surpass last year's success on Sunday afternoon, March 11, 2018.

2018 is the second year RBC Race for the Kids will be organized in Barbados. The organizers aim to double the amount of participants and funds raised this year. All proceeds will go towards students that can no longer finance their studies, and to support new students as they start their first year at campus.

Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of The UWI, Professor Eudine Barriteau commented: “Again, the 2018 race is dedicated to the UWI Cave Hill Campus Student Scholarship Fund and the First Year Experience Programme. Scholarships will be made available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. In addition, this year being the 70th Anniversary celebrations of The UWI, Cave Hill hopes to offer a 70th Anniversary Scholarship to its student body. We are aiming to raise in excess of BBD$100,000 this year.”

“RBC Race for the Kids in Barbados is just one example of how we bring to life our purpose of helping our clients thrive and communities prosper. One of the most important things we can do as business leaders and management teams is to make sure that we help create opportunities for our youth,” said Robert de Silva, Managing Director of RBC. He continued: “At RBC, we believe that education is a fundamental human right and plays a critical role in our social and economic development. The youth of today will be our leaders and teachers of tomorrow, and they will help shape our communities and our society. That is why we think our partnership with The UWI is so important.”

The Race is part of a global series of charitable runs supporting children’s and youth causes around the world and is increasing in popularity every year. Starting in 2008, RBC Race for the Kids has supported children’s and youth causes in cities like New York, Toronto, London, Hong Kong, Trinidad & Tobago and Sydney, with Barbados added to the global series of races in 2017.

At the Barbados inaugural RBC Race for the Kids last year, around 1,300 participants came together to raise BBD $63,000.

This family friendly event is open to all ages and has two separate race components, a 5K run/walk and a 5K Timed Runners Race that starts and finishes at The UWI Cave Hill Campus.
