Faculty of Law Partners with Strathclyde on the One Ocean Hub

The University of the West Indies and the University of Strathclyde are partnering on the One Ocean Hub project. Administered by the Faculty of Law, a substantial grant of £205,000 will support Lecturer Alana Malinde S.N. Lancaster’s research activities until March 2024.

Funded by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the One Ocean Hub is an ambitious new approach to tackling the world’s most pressing ecological challenges by investigating creative and sustainable solutions.

"The One Ocean Hub aims to transform our response to the urgent challenges facing our ocean at different scales. Its research seeks to bridge current disconnections in law, science and society to balance multiple ocean uses with conservation."
Professor Elisa Morgera
Lead Investigator and Director of the One Ocean Hub

The UWI joins twenty-one leading research institutions interspersed throughout the world including South Africa, Namibia, Ghana, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands. Together, they will pursue collaborative and transdisciplinary research that seeks to “empower local communities that are heavily reliant upon the oceans in shaping collective decision-making processes.”

Over the next four years, Ms Lancaster will facilitate research in marine and environmental law, policy and initiatives aimed at supporting Sustainable Development Goal 14 across the Caribbean. Her research will explore the blue economy, climate-induced migration, fisheries & wildlife crime, marine spatial planning, marine ocean literacy, and marine renewables.
