History of the College of the Bahamas

The College of the Bahamas was established in 1974 by an Act of parliament. The institution was initially created by merging the Bahamas Teachers’ College, the San Salvador Teachers’ College, the C.R. Walker Technical College and the Sixth Form Programme of the Government High School.

The Bahamas Teachers’ College was basically a two-year College, preparing teachers for both Primary and Junior Secondary Schools.

The San Salvador Teachers’ College provided a three-year programme for training teachers for all-age schools, particularly in the Family Islands.

The C.R. Walker Technical College concentrated on technical and vocational education. Students were prepared for careers such as secretaries, plumbers, cosmetologists and mechanical and electrical engineers. This institution also taught courses on a part-time basis to people already in these professions.

The Government High School’s Sixth Form prepared students for the London G.C.E. Advanced Level Certificate.

The College was initially located on two campuses with the main campus situated in the Bahamas Teachers’ College building in Oakes Field and the Soldier Road Campus occupying the premises of the former C.R. Walker Technical College. In September, 1976, the main campus was moved to the site of the old Government High School in Oakes Field.

In 1991 a cabinet decision was made to transfer Nursing Education and other related programmes from the Ministry of Health to the College of the Bahamas. The actual building known as the Bahamas School of Nursing was also transferred and is now a satellite campus of the College of the Bahamas renamed the Grosvenor Close Campus. The campus presently houses the Division of Nursing and Health Sciences.
