Brief Description of the San Fernando Technical Institute (SFTI)

 

San Fernando Technical Institute (SFTI) began as a Junior Technical Institute in 1943 with twenty (20) boys. Today, San Fernando Technical Institute has grown and developed into a multifaceted tertiary level institution of education and training offering craft, technician and higher level technician (HNC) courses. At present the student population consists of eight hundred and twenty-six (826) full time students, nine hundred and seventeen (917) part-time students and approximately one thousand (1,000) participants in short courses. Approximately 40% of the students are female.

Mandate

The mandate of San Fernando Technical Institute is to ensure that technical and vocational education and training play a catalytic role in relation to industry, the world of work and international competitiveness.

Mission Statement

The institute will design, construct, develop, implement and evaluate curricula that will maintain and sustain quality technical, vocational and technological education and training to satisfy the changing needs of the learner, the world of work, the Ministry of Education and the society.

The Structure

The top management team consists of the Principal, Vice Principal, Heads of Departments and Sections. The institute has five (5) departments and six (6) sections. The departments are Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Applied Sciences, Business Education and Management. The sections are Bursary, Registry, Library, Stores, Maintenance and Security.
