History of the Joint Services Staff College - Trinidad

Established on 5th October 1978, Joint Services Staff College is a training and educational academy committed to forging professionalism and scholarship among security personnel. The College was initially mandated by government to upgrade the requisite job skills of administrative and technical personnel of the Protective Service and Defence Force of Trinidad and Tobago on a continuous basis so that their services to the national community would be discharged with efficiency and coordination.

The training programme offered at Joint Services Staff College have of necessity evolved to address the changing and expanded roles of the security community as a whole. Today, College programmes fall into 2 major categories:

The College is authorised to issue participation certificates, diplomas and degrees that satisfy national standards of accreditation determined by the National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology(NIHERST). Employment opportunities for candidates who are fortunate to benefit from these programmes range from improving one’s promotional opportunities to job specialisation and job creation.

The Joint Services Staff College curriculum design establishes the vital link that should exist between training, attainment of professionalism and the promotion of scholarship among security staff. Its acquisition of adjunct faculty status in 1993 under a partnership arrangement with Monroe Community College, Rochester, with authority to confer associate of science degree majors in selected areas of criminal justice has been a fillip to its academic status. In 1994 it became a registered member of the Association of Tertiary Institutions of Trinidad and Tobago (ATITT). ATITT is the local chapter of the Association Caribbean Tertiary Institutions (ACTI).

Members of ACTI are required to fulfill programme and institutional standards set by their respective national accrediting bodies. These standards are reviewed on a continuous basis. It is envisaged that networking with overseas academic and agencies will forge opportunities for access to external funding and the promotion of research relevant to institutional curriculum.
