THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES
AUDINE WILKINSONLIBRARY
CAVE HILL CAMPUS
ACCESS & CIRCULATION POLICIES
INFORMATION
Opening Hours - Monday-Friday - 8.30am to 6:30 pm during the semester.
There will be occasions when the Library may have to be closed at short notice.
The library is a research and not a lending facility. As a research facility the collection is designated to reading room status. This means that items may only be used in the library. University academic staff members will be given limited borrowing privileges when items are unavailable in the Main Library. There are some instances where this privilege may be extended to others, but each case will be assessed individually.
The Library is open to all academic, professional, research and senior administrative staff, permanent administrative, technical and support staff of the University of the West Indies, registered graduate students, and researchers from other academic and non-academic institutions. These users are permitted to use the Library for reading or reference purposes.
BORROWING PROCEDURES
All users will be required to have a valid ID card. Visiting researchers and outside users will be required to fill out the Library's Registration Form before using the Library. This form lasts for one academic year and is obtained at the circulation desk.
University academic staff borrowing books must have their books checked out by the circulation staff and they may not be removed from the Library unless this procedure has been completed.
Borrowers must also be aware that the Audine Wilkinson Library is a part of the UWI Cave Hill Library network and information is shared across this system. Therefore books borrowed from any of the libraries in the network will be counted against their total allowance. A borrower is responsible to the Library for the books for which he/she has borrowed.
RENEWALS
Books loaned may be renewed for a further period if they have not been reserved by another academic staff member. In that case the item will be recalled. A borrower who fails to return a book after it has been recalled by three (3) notices will have his/her borrowing privileges suspended until the book is returned.
There are some publications which may on no account be removed from the Library. These include rare, fragile, reference, bound journals, newspapers, and such other publications as the Librarian may decide on from time to time.
CONDUCT
Eating and drinking are strictly forbidden in the Library.
Cell phones should be turned off or placed on vibrate while using the library.
Briefcases, bags and similar receptacles are not allowed in the Library.
LOCATION
All items are located on open shelves or in compact storage.
SPECIAL LOAN PERIODS / DUE DATES
Our collection is restrictive – limited to reading room status. The borrowing period for books loaned to academic staff members with limited borrowing privileges is two weeks.
There are also some materials which may not be handled.
LOST OR DAMAGED MATERIAL
Any user who damages or loses an item will be charged with the cost of replacement of that item. Items lost or damaged will be billed at the following rates:
- Books: Current cost of replacement and administrative charges.
- Periodicals: Current cost of replacement and administrative charges.
If the item is found and returned, the replacement charge will be refunded but there will be a non-refundable $20.00 service charge per item.
