The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), formerly the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER), is found on each of the three campuses of the University of the West Indies, i.e., in Barbados (Cave Hill Campus), Jamaica (Mona Campus) and Trinidad & Tobago (St. Augustine Campus). SALISES was established in August 1999 as a result of a merger of the ISER (Cave Hill), established in 1963 and the Consortium Graduate School of Social Sciences (CGSSS), established in 1985. Initially concerned mainly with issues relating to manpower and economic development, this Branch has widened its focus to include studies in the areas of political science, public administration, migration, demography, women and development and human resource development. The Institute works closely with members of the Faculty of Social Sciences on various research projects. It has developed a capability in the conduct of comparative research, multi-disciplinary projects, sample surveys (e.g. political polls, market research) and quantitative economic research. It is at the cutting edge on explaining and investigating Caribbean developmental concerns.
