It is again our special honour and privilege to host the UWI 13th Biennial Inter-campus Staff Games at the Cave Hill campus. On behalf of the management, staff and students, I extend a warm welcome to our extended University family - competitors and supporters alike – and hope that throughout your stay, you will thoroughly enjoy the wonderful ambiance of our picturesque campus and its modern sporting facilities, our unique UWI camaraderie and the legendary Barbadian warmth. A special welcome is extended to the Open Campus which is participating in the Staff Games for the first time as a separate campus.

From their inception in 1988, these games have enabled the University community to build stronger relations and form new friendships, while facilitating for many an opportunity to visit a sister campus to sample its uniqueness and the culture of its host country. With the addition of the Open Campus, similar opportunities for wider regional experiences will undoubtedly unfold even further.

Founded on friendly rivalry, the staff games will pit the skill, stamina and athleticism of members of staff in ten keenly contested sports over ten days; each UWI contingent vying to be crowned inter-campus staff champions. Some sports will be played at various venues on the island, giving participants a chance to see and sample life across the island.

On a sad note, the games will miss the presence of Torrianno Simmons, a keen and active participant, who died April 28 and Ms. Dale Robinson, who passed away last month.  Torri’s death, in particular, exemplified the strength and unity forged and nestled in these games as staff from both the Mona and St. Augustine campuses journeyed to Barbados to pay their final respects.

Indeed, we all can pay Torri no greater tribute than to carry on these games with that same sense of camaraderie – even as we are fiercely competitive – striving for even greater harmony in the true spirit of University and Caribbean unity.
