Scholarships

Scholarship applications are normally considered by the Postgraduate Scholarship Committee in June each year.  Most scholarships are intended for Research Students however the UWI (Cave Hill) Co-Operative Credit Union, SOL scholarships and the De La Rue scholarship provide support for a few students in Taught Masters programmes.

Applications for scholarships are to be submitted in triplicate to the School for Graduate Studies and Research, unless otherwise stated in the specific regulations, and must be accompanied by 2 referee reports

Prospective, newly admitted and continuing students are eligible to apply, however prospective students should note that scholarships can only be awarded after they accept any offer of admission made.

Unless otherwise stated in the regulations for a specific Scholarship, the deadline for all applications is May 30 of each year.  Note that late applications will not be processed.



UWI POSTGRADUATE (ELSA GOVEIA) SCHOLARSHIP - open to graduates of the University of the West Indies or the University of Guyana or another Caribbean University pursuing full-time studies in M.Phil or Ph.D. Caribbean History.

One (1) scholarship currently valued at BDS$22,000 is available annually.  The scholarship is awarded for 2 years - MPhil students, 3 years - PhD students.  Tuition Fees and Economic Costs are waived for the duration of the Scholarship.



UWI POSTGRADUATE (REX NETTLEFORD) SCHOLARSHIP - open to graduates of the University of the West Indies or other approved Universities pursuing full-time M.Phil or Ph.D. studies in any of the following areas; Sociology, Anthropology, Cultural Studies or Gender Studies

One (1) scholarship currently valued at BDS$22,000 is available annually.  The scholarship is awarded for 2 years - MPhil students, 3 years - PhD students.  Tuition Fees and Economic Costs are waived for the duration of the Scholarship.


UWI POSTGRADUATE (GENERAL) SCHOLARSHIP - open to graduates of the University of the West Indies or other approved Universities pursuing full-time M. Phil or Ph.D. programmes in any area. 

Two (2) scholarships currently valued at BDS$22,000 are available annually.  Scholarships are awarded for - 2 years MPhil students, 3 years - PhD students.  Tuition Fees and Economic Costs are waived for the duration of the Scholarships.



THE BARBADOS ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED PERSONS (BARP) POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP - open to Barbadian graduate students undertaking studies full-time researching any issue dealing with aging.

One (1) scholarship is available annually and is currently valued at BDS$10,000.00



THE U.W.I. (CAVE HILL) CO-OPERATIVE CREDIT UNION LIMITED POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP - open to full time students in Taught Masters programmes who have been, or whose parents/guardians have been, a member of the U.W.I. (Cave Hill) Co-operative Credit Union for a period of at least two (2) years.

One scholarship for a maximum duration of two (2) years is available each year and it is worth BDS$10,000.  If the student's programme is between 1 and 2 years in duration the award during the second year will be pro-rated.  50% of the funds are disbursed prior to the commencement of Semester 1 and the other 50% prior to the commencement of Semester 2.  Further details and applications forms are available from the U.W.I. THE SOL POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS - open to nationals from the OECS and Caribbean region who are either full-time or part-time registered students undertaking postgraduate programmes in the Faculties of Science & Technology and Social Sciences. 

Seven (7) scholarships for students in Taught Masters programmes and two (2) awards for Research students will be offered across all campuses of the University every year.

THE DE LA RUE SCHOLARSHIP - open to nationals of Barbados who are pursuing or have been accepted into a full-time postgraduate programme at the M.Sc. level in Economics or Finance at the UWI, Cave Hill Campus or who are in the final year of an MPhil or PhD programme relating to Economics or Finance at the UWI, Cave Hill Campus. 

One (1) scholarship tenable for 1 year will be awarded biennially through the auspices of the Central Bank of Barbados.  This scholarship is currently valued at BDS$35,000 and is intended to primarily cover the cost of books, materials, and tuition with the balance being devoted to subsistence.  Click here to read the DE LA RUE  regulations.



THE UWI POSTGRADUATE SPORTS SCHOLARSHIP – open to nationals of the Commonwealth Caribbean who have gained admission, or qualify for admission, into any full-time taught masters programme in any discipline at the UWI, Cave Hill Campus.

Two (2) scholarships will be available annually and will be tenable for one academic year, renewable on an annual basis for a duration of up to three (3) years depending on the student’s academic and sporting performance.  The Scholarship award will be the relevant tuition fees for the full-time taught masters programme.

The Committee may in exceptional cases, on the recommendation of the Head, Academy of Sport, also award a Sports Grant of up to BDS$6,000.00 to Scholarship holders who have contributed exceptionally to UWI sports competitions or who are experiencing financial hardship. This award shall primarily cover the cost of books and materials with the balance being devoted to subsistence.

THE UWI POSTGRADUATE FEE WAIVER SCHOLARSHIP – The Scholarship is tenable only at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies.  It is open to nationals of the contributing territories of the University of the West Indies who have been accepted into the current academic year to pursue full - time or part- time studies in any MPhil or Ph.D. Programme at The UWI, Cave Hill Campus.

Applicants for this Scholarship should normally have, as a minimum, a Lower Second Class Honours Degree.

The Scholarship is tenable for two (2) years with the possibility of extension for such additional periods until completion of the MPhil or Ph.D. programme depending on the student’s academic performance.

The Scholarship holder is required to contribute up to thirteen hours (13) each semester towards the work of the Cave Hill Campus, using their area of academic expertise.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMMES BY THE EMBASSY OF BRAZIL-
This scholarship is only being offered to Barbadian Postgraduate students 

INTEREST FREE LOAN- The Organization of American States (OAS) of the Leo S. Rowe Pan American Fund (Rowe Fund) created in 1948 as an education loan program designed to assist citizens of Latin American and Caribbean OAS Member States in funding their studies in the United States of America (USA).  Under the program, students can be awarded interest-free loans of up to US$15,000.00.  These education loans are designed to supplement rather than cover all of the student’s expenses.  Characteristics of the Rowe Fund is as follows:
  • Students must be enrolled in graduate studies, exchange programmes, professional training, or the last two years of undergraduate studies.  Programmes should have a minimal duration of one semester (at least four months) and should not exceed two years. 
  • Students can apply to the Rowe Fund throughout the year.
  • Repayment of loans from the Rowe Fund takes place after the student completes studies in the USA. 
  • Students must return to their country of origin within a year of completing his or her studies in order to further enable intercultural exchange and socioeconomic development in the region.

THE KOREAN GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP- The National Institute for International Education (NIIED) of the Korean Government wishes to invite graduate students who are citizens of Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago or Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to participate in the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP 2018). The KGSP is designed to provide higher education, as well as fostering mutual friendship amongst the participating countries.
The duration of the program will be 3 years for Masters and 4 years for Doctoral with 1 year being allocated for Korean language study. This Scholarship Program will cover all expenses including airfare, accommodation, tuition and monthly expenses. For your information, I have enclosed herewith the guidelines along with further details for this program.
In this regard, I would like to kindly ask your assistance in circulating and promoting this Scholarship Program to the students at the UWI Cave Hill Campus. I wish to further inform you that all interested applicants should forward their applications to the Embassy by Friday March 16, 2018.
