A major priority at The UWI Cave Hill Campus is developing our research capacity. Here is a list of some of our research students.

Tara J. Wilkinson

Faculty/Department: IGDS
Tara

Tara J. Wilkinson is a PhD Candidate at the Institute of Gender and Development Studies: Nita Barrow Unit, UWI. She is a Feminist Media Scholar with an avid interest in gender, class and race relations. Her research passion focuses on the development of an ongoing Caribbean Media studies conversation that speaks to the diverse experiences that shape the region and that accounts for our unique and often unequal social relations. Her work is positioned within the context of regional and outer regional discussions about the production, consumption and simultaneous interpretation of media discourses.

Her PhD research explores how young Caribbean men interpret media representations and the ways that these negotiations shape the performance of manhood. The research uses creative visual techniques as an entry point for exploring the complex and layered issues of masculinity through merging the theoretical insights from gender studies, art history and new media research. On completion of her PhD, Tara intends to publish, lecture and consult in the fields of Caribbean gender and media studies.
